Since the beginning of time, mushrooms have always taken an inevitable part in Asian cuisine. It is their entourage of health benefits and therapeutic values that made them so essential in various traditional and alternative forms of medications. Likewise with the increasing global awareness, this superfood has turned into an intrinsic part of almost all global cuisines.
How to go about the process? Unlike the myths, growing mushrooms in real-time aren’t as difficult. Generally for home growers the best ways to grow Shiitake mushroom log is by buying pre-inoculated logs from leading suppliers and just maintaining the environment till fruiting. However, even starting from scratch isn’t difficult either.
What are the requirements? • Shiitake spawns • One or two green kinds of wood. Hardwood deciduous trees like Oak or Poplar works best for Shiitake growth.Keep the diameter of the log around 4 to 8 inches. And remember to keep the log as fresh as possible. The fresher the log you pick the more uninhabited substrate you provide for your spawns to grow. • A high-speed multi-purpose power drill • In case you are using mushroom plugs use rubber mallets to put the plugs within the hole • Organic beeswax • A heat source • Paintbrush • However, amongst the more effective and less time-consuming Shiitake mushroom log buying pre-inoculated logs completed sealed saving the spawns from predators comes as a great option.
The steps • Get your spawns • You need to get the fungal spawns from the market. • Drill the holes • Once all is prepared, start drilling holes in your log. Ideally, there should be 50 holes in a 3 feet long log. So start drilling hole each 1 ¼ inch deep. Also don’t forget to keep them 3to 4 inches apart. • Inoculation While inoculating the plugs make sure that your hands are completely clean. Start inoculating the plugs within the holes such that the surface of plugs goes at or below the log level. Remember not to leave any empty holes. In case you have made a number of holes seal them completely with wax. • Sealing Once you have properly plugged all holes melt the wax and use the paintbrush to seal the plugs completely.
Incubate It generally takes 6 to 12 months for the fruit bodies to spring up. During this time keep the logs in moist shady places. Avoid direct sunlight. Try and cover them with a cotton cloth for storing the moisture. In case you live in wet areas, water the logs once a week for 10 minutes. While if you are in dry areas with low or no rainfall water them twice a week for more than 10 minutes. • Initiate fruiting Once your log starts showing indications of colony growth take them and submerge them overnight in cold non-chlorinated water. Next day place them back to shades and keep them in upright vertical position this time. Within a couple of days, the primordia of fruit bodies will spring up. • Endnote Growing of Shiitakes is pretty easy if you can properly maintain the aseptic conditions and provide the environment. However if the aforementioned steps feel cumbersome for you just reach to leading sellers and buy pre-inoculated logs and enjoy fruits within couple of weeks.
