Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute Center for Research on Aging Evaluation Study of the Spiritual Support Programs in Long-Term Care Institutions Shirli Resnizky and Prof. Netta Bentur Jewish Spiritual Care Professional Advisory Task Force Meeting December 15th, 2010 December 15, 2010 -
Background • The development of spiritual care programs in LTC institutions by the New York Federation and ESHEL • A 10 week spiritual care course for key personnel in LTC institutions • A pilot program to place 6 spiritual care providers in nursing homes • The Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute was asked to evaluate the project and develop a model, in light of the institute's involvement in the development of spiritual support in Israel and its multi-year relationship with ESHEL
Study Goals • To monitor the integration of the spiritual care provider (SCP) in the institution: successes and challenges (process measure and output measure) • To document the SCP's activity (scope, patient characteristics, type of contact, patterns of care, etc.) (process/output measures) • To examine the perceived contribution of spiritual support for residents and their families (outcome measure) • To examine how key staff in the institution perceive the SCP and his/her integration into the institution, their satisfaction and willingness to employ him/her in the future (outcome measure).
Study Methods • Among the SCPs • In-depth interviews 3 times a year (total of 18 interviews) • Ongoing reports on activities, using a work diary that includes: • Demographic details on the patient and family • Activity patterns (personal, group, frequency, etc.) • Tools (conversation, poetry reading, singing, praying, etc.) • Activities for the staff • Subjective impressions of their work • Among the directors of the institutions and the contact persons • In-depth interviews at the start and end of the year (total of 12 interviews) • In-depth interviews at mid-year and end of year (total of 12 interviews) • Among the residents or their families • Semi-structured in-depth interviews (total of 20)
Plans for the Next Two Months • Official opening of the program – meeting with all the SCPs, the representatives of ESHEL and the Federation. • Development of the tools – the diary and guidelines for the open interviews. We will be happy to hear ideas/suggestions for tools that are being used • Instruction for SCPs on how to keep the diary • Initial interviews with the directors and the SCPs. • Once the study is completed, the results will be presented to ESHEL, representatives of the Federation, LTC institution directors and senior in the social and health services.
