Mind Blower • Everyone’s unconscious mind effects their decision making. • In 1980, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra needed a trombonist. Because one of the candidates was the son of a member of the board of directors, they decided to do the auditions behind a screen to hide the identity of the performer to eliminate any bias to select him. • One candidate was the clear winner. When the candidate came out, the judges were astonished to see that she was female. She had been invited by accident - her invitation used the title “Herr”. They reluctantly added her to the orchestra, but spent years discriminating against her in various ways. • Eventually “blind” auditions became the norm, and the number of women has gone up by 500%. But in addition to not being able to see the performer, they also ask them to audition barefoot. • It turned out that the distinctive sound of high heels caused a drop in acceptance for women who auditioned, even though the judges were not consciously identifying those candidates as female.
