Eugene Atget noticed that there was a demand for pictures of the old Paris and he spent the early part of his photographic career building up a portfolio of work and clients in this field. His work included photographs of old buildings, street vendors, architectural details and buildings that were about to be demolished, and of course the old Paris.
Rag picker(1899) In this image, a chiffonier , or rag picker, pulls his horseless cart through the Paris streets. The deep shadow that conceals half the vendor's face amplifies the intense expression created by his furrowed brow. Despite being notoriously independent and proud, rag pickers were outcasts in the view of French society.
