Defining ChinesePutonghua/Guoyu/Huayu/Hanyu • Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan Family; • Mandarin--the official modern language used by the Mainland China, Taiwan & one of the four official languages of Singapore. • Phonology--is based on the Beijing dialect. • Vocabulary is largely drawn from this group of dialects. • Grammar is standardized by modern literary works written in Vernacular Chinese since 1911.

The Sound of Chinese--Properties of phonetics-- • Four Systems of Romanization: Wade-Giles; Yale; Taiwan Zhuyin; & Pinyin (Mainland); • Chinese characters are mostly monosyllabic made of Initials, Finals, & (arguably four) Tones--yóu tǐng for yacht; • As a tonal language, meaning is determined by tones, among other things such as word order & context. For instance: wénwen vs. wěnwen. • Classical Example: mā má mǎ mà 妈麻马骂

Representation of Pitches • The first tone (Flat or High Level Tone) is represented by a macron (ˉ) • The second tone (Rising or High-Rising Tone) is denoted by an acute accent (ˊ) • The third tone (Falling-Rising or Low Tone) is symbolized by a caron/háček ( ˇ ) • The fourth tone (Falling or High-Falling Tone) is represented by a grave accent (ˋ) • The fifth or neutral tone (Neutral Tone) is represented by a normal vowel without any accent mark
