  1. Beauty, Sensuality, and Lust

  2. 1 Peter 3.4 • let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight

  3. Ecc 3.11 • He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart,

  4. my definition of beauty • when we perceive the presence or the work of the Spirit of God • the epitome is Creation when God looks on the natural world and sees that it is good, or looks at man and woman and sees they are very good. • (In the garden of Eden – everything was beautiful) • Spirit in us recognizing the Spirit incarnate in someone or something.

  5. Dostoyevsky’s Prince Myshkin said, “Beauty will save the world!” • Simone Weil said more poetically: “Beauty is that small tear in the surface of the world that pulls us through to some vaster space, lifting us out of ourselves.” • Hegel wrote: “Beauty is the spiritual making itself known sensuously.”

  6. Sensuality/sensuousness – the sensory engagement/appreciation of beauty or pleasure – experienced beauty (as opposed to intellectual or abstract beauty)

  7. Enter fear and mistrust • "Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." Gen 3.16 • “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.“ Gen. 4.7

  8. Lust is desire (originally for something good, beautiful, sensual) that has become distorted by fear and competition. Distortion goes mainly in 2 directions: • 1. Cheating – shortcuts. I try to find a shortcut to pleasure and beauty instead of the natural pathways. • 2. Possessing/dominating (control) – I guarantee my access to what I desire.

  9. 1. Go for real beauty – be intentional and hard-working about going for the really beautiful (and expand your perception of beauty) 2. Trust – Trust that beauty is all around – there is enough to go around. We don't have to compete for beauty in our lives.
