  2. This morning.. • An introduction to how phonics is taught at Chawson • A chance to see a phonics session in your child’s class • Time to try different phonics activities with your child

  3. What is ‘Phonics’? • Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing. • It is the link between letters and the sounds that they make. • Children are taught: • The sounds that letters make (44 sounds) • To hear separate sounds within words • To blend sounds together to read words

  4. The Importance of listening skills • Phonics relies on children being able to hear and distinguish the sounds within words. • Therefore it is really important that your child learns: • To hear and experiment with sounds through their play. • To develop their listening and attention skills.

  5. Letters and Sounds • Letters and Sounds is a resource for the teaching of phonics which was issued by the Department of Education in 2007. • There are 6 phases which span from Reception to end of Year 2. • By then most children will be confident readers and writers.

  6. Key Words – A Quick Quide • phoneme - ‘sound’ • grapheme – the way you write the sound • digraph- A combination of two graphemes (letters) representing one phoneme (sound) e.g. sh/ch • trigraph- a combination of three letters representing one phoneme e.g. igh/ear • segment – ‘chop’ the word into its sounds to spell it • blend – say all the sounds in a word quickly to read the word

  7. Sound Talk • Many of the children will have used sound talk in pre school and it is still very important. • Let’s use our ‘Robot arms’ to segment and blend the sounds in some words! • We also use ‘sound buttons’ dog shell torch

  8. We play lots to games to practice segmenting and blending! We play I spy... ‘I spy a p-e-g – peg’ ‘I spy a c-u-p – cup’ ‘Where’s your other s-o-ck – sock?’

  9. Jolly Phonics • In Year R children also use Jolly Phonics alongside Letters and Sounds. • Jolly Phonics is used to give an actions for each sound. • We also use ‘Inky Mouse’ who helps the children learn each new sound with a story. p i n a s t

  12. The importance of reading at home It is widely known that regular reading at home will benefit your child as they progress through their school life.

  13. Support your child by… • finding time to talk together • listening for sounds • singing and making music • hearing rhyming words • reading books • learning nursery rhymes • look at handout for more • fun ideas!
