Information and Library Services • Began 1995 • Three levels only - 2, 3, 4 • Oxford, Cambridge, RSA (OCR) • OCR last registration July 2001, last completion July 2004 • Health Libraries Network, City and Guilds as awarding body 2003 • NVQs recognised in job profiles, salaries
City and Guilds • New scheme started early 2003, last enrolment December 2010 • Two levels only - 2 and 3 • EDI scheme approved August 2010
Southern Counties Libraries Vocational Qualification Network • Established October 2010 • New name better reflects multi-sector candidates and geography • Approved as Centre by Education Development International (EDI) December 2010 • First candidates started April 2011
New EDI qualifications: Libraries, Archives, Information Services • Level 2 Certificate, 30 credits, 300 notional learning hours • Level 3 Diploma, 45 credits, 450 notional learning hours • 21 L2 credits can transfer to L3 • Some L4 units in L3 award • L3 includes Health Information optional unit • Guide on LLUK website • http://www.lluk.org/documents/Libraries_AO_Guide_for_web.pdf
EDI: Electronic portfolio scheme • E-portfolio has replaced C&G paper portfolio • Forms link to evidence • Standards similar to City and Guilds but updated • Portfolio can be seen by assessor, verifier, and EDI Quality Advisor, Trevor Meakin

Assessment • Assessor works one to one with candidate, workplace, e-mail etc • Are you competent ? • How does your assessor know ? • How do others know ? • E-portfolio provides evidence • Evidence - valid, sufficient, authentic, current, reliable
Verification • Confirms validity of assessment decisions • Internal and then external • Gives wider perspective on standards, quality • Evidence not meeting standards - • Action points for candidate to represent
Types of assessment • Observation – sometimes mandatory • Candidate narrative, reflective log • Questions, oral, written • Professional discussion ( taped ) • Work products • Witness statements • Some prescription in standards
Training for Assessors and Verifiers • Assessors / verifiers learn on the job • Training courses run by local providers e.g. Colleges • Assessor / verifier portfolios to demonstrate competence • A1, A2, V1 ( previously D32, D33, D34) • Decisions need to be countersigned by qualified staff until training completed • Awards take three to six months to complete • Assessor / team meetings

Our candidates (pre EDI) • 16 OCR 2000-2001, 56 C&G 2003-2010, multi-sector including health, schools, university, equipment library, public libraries, colleges • 36 C&G completed, 6 withdrew, 14 in progress • 9+ postgraduate courses, others considering • 18+ promotion, internal or external • 5+ ACLIP, 1 MCLIP others in progress • All gained skills, knowledge • Past candidates as library managers, publishers
How long will it take • Self paced, people work differently, have varied skills, abilities, opportunities • Assessor will give guidance • Rough guide - 18 months level 3, 12 months level 2

Costs • EDI L2, internal £420.00; external £720.00 • EDI L3, internal £550.00; external £950.00 • Costs include registration, assessment, verification, certification • EDI costs are being calculated using NHS costing tools and may change from Autumn 2011
