Key Terms Beliefs of Judaism Covenant- a promise made by God Moses- an Israelite leader whom the Torah credits with leading the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan prophet- a religious teacher who is regarded as someone who speaks for God or for a god Diaspora- the scattering of people who have a common background or beliefs

  4. Beliefs of Judaism • Israelites closely connected religion and history • Israelites beliefs became a religion known today as Judaism • Judaism was monotheistic from the beginning • Different than the beliefs of nearby people.

He told them God would lead them to Canaan if they obeyed God faithfully

  9. Judaism and Woman • Some laws protected woman • As many other religions, women were considered to be of lower social status • Only a husband could seek divorce

  10. Justice and Morality • The history of the Israelites tells of prophets • Prophets told them how God wanted them to live • They warned them not to disobey god’s law

  11. Effects of Judaism • Exile from Judah in 587 B.C. • Romans drove the Jews out of their homeland in 135 A.D • After that, Jewish people scattered to different parts of the world

  12. Effects of Judaism New Settlements • Wherever Jewish people settled they kept their heritage alive! • They also continued to obey their religious laws, worship at temples, and follow their traditions.
