Chelo.andres@plymouth.ac.uk ALTC2010 RESEARCH RATIONALE • To reach our international students before or immediately after they come to Plymouth. • Facilitating precise practical aspects of their academic and personal life such as how to register with a GP or what ISAS can do for them. • Emphasis on interaction, emotional learning and non-formal learning opportunities. WORKING HYPOTHESIS • That using interactive multimedia tools may help them to get familiar with Plymouth and its University. • Linguistic and communicative competence will improve as IS@P become more familiar with the new environment. • That academic change and culture shock may be lessened by boosting their self-confidence and sign-posting coping strategies

Chelo.andres@plymouth.ac.uk ALTC2010 REALIZATIONS • Chinese students have gained experience in a very different community of practices to ours. • Values of stability, permanency and collectivism can clash with Western values. • The fact that English is a lingua franca, doesn’t mean that the English way of doing things is the best. • Respect not just tolerance of other cultures is the way to work together RECOMMENDATIONS • To raise awareness of intercultural issues and provide intercultural activities. • To expand e-cards to cover other aspects of students experience: accommodation, career options, etc. • To further fund research to monitor and disseminate the e-cards’ impact on future cohorts.
