THEMES INDIVIDUAL IN SOCIETY - REPUTATION Social pressures within the community Parris is desperate to keep this a secret – ‘my enemies will know it, and they will ruin me with it’ plus 2 more references to enemies REBELLION - DECEIT Salem is a disciplined community – the girls have broken conduct by dancing. Why?

  3. KEY SEGMENT 2THE PUTNAMS • Immediate accusation of witchcraft • Rumour has already spread in the village • Ann Putnam is grieving and desperate to find someone to blame

  4. THEMES POWER Reflected in both Parris and Putnam’s status – influence over others in either wealth or moral authority (Putnam – land owning) (Parris – moral hold on community) PARANOIA Ann Putnam reflects this - BLAME/ACCUSATION ‘there is a murdering witch among us’

  5. KEY SEGMENT 3ABI, MERCY, MARY, BETTY • The first time the girls are alone since the night in the woods – the truth is revealed • Abigail threatens and controls the others – she is also violent • Mary Warren is singled out as being weak • Betty wakes – she tries to fly

THEMES POWER • Abigail holds power over the girls MANIPULATION • Abigail again – to save herself, protect her own name – ‘She (Elizabeth) is blackening my name in the village!’ FEAR • Instils fear in the other girls - ‘I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning.’ Mary Warren is pinpointed as the weakest – she is most in fear of the situation, and of Abi.

  8. THEMES LOVE/OBSESSION • Abigail is besotted with John, she is in awe of him GUILT • John feels guilty for betraying Elizabeth REVENGE • Abigail blames Elizabeth for John’s refusal of her – she is desperate to take revenge

KEY SEGMENT 5Putnams, Parris, Abi, Proctor, Rebecca, Giles • Betty screams at the sound of singing • Ann Putnam assumes it is the sound of God’s name – she is determined to prove the Devil is at work • Rebecca and Giles try to calm the hysteria • The first hint of conflict in the community over land/money • We learn that people in the village do not all like Parris

THEMES HYSTERIA • The madness wakes Betty – ‘Betty can’t stand hearing the Lord’s name’ CONFLICT • Proctor VS Parris – ‘the last meeting I were at, you spoke so long on deeds and mortgages I thought it were an auction’ – we see John is not happy with the way the Parish is being run BLAME/ACCUSATION • Petty rifts lead the way for accusation

  12. THEMES PREJUDICE • Easier to blame the vulnerable, those of lower standing in the community (Tituba) BLAME/ACCUSATIONS • The children hold the power here which is unusual in this community PRESSURE – MANIPULATION • Hale is influenced by the community ‘mob’ in identifying witchcraft in Salem
