Madrid • The region of Madrid is a Mediterranean climate that has cold winters due to it’s very high altitude of 650 meters above sea level. • The summers are hot that have a consistency of always being higher than 86 degrees in July and August. • Summer and Winter are the driest seasons. • Madrid’s mountain regions have peaks rising above 2,000 meters. • According to legend Ocno Bianor founded Madrid. • In 1085 this country was conquered by the Christians with a population of 1,561-30,000 people. • Most of the population was affected by the Civil War. • For the very first time in 1976, elections brought democracy to Madrid. Madrid • The population as of 2011 is 3,265,038 million people. • The average weather is high 50’s and low 30’s. • The currency is euros. • The exchange rate is $1.00 = 0.76€. • Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. • Madrid is considered one of the top European destinations because of its’ art museums. • The most famous museum is the Prado museum.
Lugares Para Visitar • This palace was originally designed by Filippo Juvarra. • The largest royal palace in Western Europe. • The palace contains furniture, tapestries, paintings and ceramics with other important works of art by Tiépolo. • Remains open to public almost al year except on official ceremonies and receptions. Madrid’s Royal palace • This was designed by Ventura Rodriguez. • The plaza was sculpted in 1782. • It shows Cybele, the Greek goddess of fertility and nature. • The wild lions symbolize the power of nature or of the goddess. • It originally stood outside the Prado Museum, but in the 19th century it was moved to the center of the square. Palacio de Communicaciones • When King Philips II made Madrid the capital of Spain in 1561, he wanted to build a cathedral for his capital. • The construction started in 1883, due to the delay of the neglecting powerful large city, Toledo. • The construction was complete in the year 1993. • The cathedral is 104 meters long and 76 meters wide. • The central dome has a diameter of 20 meters. Lugares Para Visitar • The structure is made out of granite. • The construction started in 1812 under the Napoleonic government of Joseph Bonaparte and completed in 1827, but renovated in 1995. • The free-standing gate is 19 meters high and has three archways. The tallest one is in the middle. • The design wasn’t Napoleonic instead they hired Antonio López Aguado to come up with a new design. • In the 1900’s, the structure had outgrown it’s huge collection of artwork. • The permanent collection in the museum is one of the largest in the world. • It contains 9,000 paintings, 5,000 drawings, 2,000 prints, 1,000 coins and medals with 2,000 decorative objects. Celebraciones, Tradiciones de Año Nuevo • There are three options to do during New Year’s. • One, you can go to Puerta del Sol with the crowds and celebrate 12 chimes at midnight in Madrid’s main square. • Second, you can just have late dinner with family and friends watching the broadcast of the 12 chimes on TV. • Third, you can have dinner at a restaurant where there is meals, drinks, a dance party with live music all included in a fixed price. Celebraciones, Tradiciones de Año Nuevo • It’s tradition to mound a huge clock outside so the countdown is broadcasted for the rest of Spain. • Grapes are a unique tradition to Spain. • If you celebrate the stroke of midnight in Madrid, you must eat 12 grapes by the time the clock finishes it’s 12 chimes. • This tradition began in 1909. • It’s said to guarantee you 12 months of good luck. Creencias y Supersticiones de Año Nuevo • Eating twelve grapes in each stroke my midnight and wish to be different in every bite. • Make a lot of noise with bells and whistles because it’s believed to frighten and scare away witches and negative spirits that may be near. • They believe that whatever is being done at midnight on the 31st of December, it will be made during the upcoming year. • They believe in getting new clothes to start the New Year. • They believe if you wear yellow undergarment, you’ll attract good energy. • If you wear red underwear then that means you want to find or keep love.
Creencias y Supersticiones de Año Nuevo • They believe that if you want to travel in the upcoming year then you should pack all your clothes in the luggage and after midnight take them out of the house. • To have a bunch of bills in his/her hand means that they seek to ensure economic prosperity and abundance for the New Year. • Eating a bowl of lentils or beans means you seeking for fortune and prosperity. • If you decorate the house with spikes then that will bring you peace and good luck to them home. Creencias y Supersticiones de Año Nuevo • They believe that if you buy a new broom and put it behind the door or outside the house that it will aim away bad influence. • Many people put a lot of food on the table because for them it represents health and wealth. • If you sit back and stand up each time the 12 chimes ring then that means you seek marriage if you really want it.
