Key Benefits of Mobile Communications • Flexible and accessible communications between learners and tutors • Rapid response times, always on technology • Learner choice and control • Ability to engage with course activity away from computer • Increased sense of community for distance learners
Social Networking • Encouraging learners to share resources and information • Social bookmarking, RSS feeds and aggregation sites • Embedded in Moodle to integrate with the MobiGlam development • Broad dialogue with learners about preferences and usage
Key Challenges: Technical • Different versions of Moodle require MobiGlam upgrades to match • Different institutional Moodle implementations need to be catered for • Requires time and commitment on the part of institutional technical staff However: • Not a major problem and offers significant benefits
Key Challenges: Institutional • Academic programmes not guaranteed to run • Tutor responsibilities not known in advance • Institutional reorganisation creates uncertainty and loss of motivation • Interaction with learners and tutors is constrained by the academic timetable
2008/2009 planning • Two periods of implementation and evaluation planned across three (possibly four) HE in FE cohorts • Will introduce blended learning to campus based learners • Will enhance distance learning for work-based learners • Is likely to be introduced widely if shown to be successful
