  1. 12.2 Newton’s First and Second Laws of Motion

  2. Objectives • Identify and describe the forces acting on an object using a force diagram. • Describe weight in terms of the force of a planet’s or moon’s gravity acting on a given mass. • Recognize that inertia is a property of matter that can be described as an object’s tendency to resist a change in motion, and is dependent upon the object’s mass. • Determine the effect of the sum of the forces acting on an object. • Using information about net force and mass determine the effect on acceleration. • Analyze force pairs when given a scenario and describe their magnitudes and directions. • Predict the path of an object when the net force changes.

  3. Introduction The Importance of Seat Belts

  4. Demonstration

  5. Sir Issac Newton (1643-1727) Greatest Genius Ever • Invented calculus • Discovered properties of light • Created first modern telescopes • Discovered laws of gravity and motion

  6. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion • An object at rest tends to remain at rest, …an object in motion tends to remain in motion,

  7. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion …until acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  8. Principle of Inertia Objects with more mass have more inertia • Newton’s 1st law of motion is sometimes called the law of inertia. • Inertia is the tendency of matter to resist a change in motion. • Mass is a measure of the amount of inertia of an object.

  9. Stopping • Finish second law tomorrow!

  11. Review • How do you know an unbalanced force has occurred? • Give an example. • How do you know a balanced force has occurred? • Give an example.

  12. More Review • What force opposes the motion of objects that touch as they move past each other? • Name a type of friction and give an example. • What force acts between any two masses in the universe? • Why don’t you feel the gravity between you and the person you’re sitting next to? • Why don’t you feel the gravity between you and the planet Jupiter?

  13. Even More Review • What term is used for when a falling object’s acceleration of gravity, equals its air resistance (hint: it’s the highest velocity at which an object can fall)? • Projectiles do not fall in a straight line. Why not? • What is Newton’s 1st law of motion? • What is inertia?

  14. Inertia • Everest • Wood Rage • 3D Test 3D

  15. Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion • The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force acting on the object… …and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. Got it?

  16. Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion Newton’s 2nd Law Formula Force = mass x acceleration F ÷ ÷ m a x

  17. Sample Problems 1. Find the acceleration of a 0.5kg rock if a force of 15N is applied to it. Given: Work: Formula: Answer:

  18. 2.How much force is needed to accelerate a 4000kg truck at a rate of 5m/s2? Given: Work: Formula: Answer:

  19. Weight and Mass Weight Weight is a measure of the force of gravity acting on an object. • Measure of gravity • Measured in pounds or Newtons Mass Mass – the amount of matter in an object. • Measure of inertia • Measured in grams Hyperlink

  20. We Can Apply The Differences Between Mass and Weight! 3. A boy has a mass of 70kg. What is his weight? Given: Work: Formula: Answer: Conversions 1 pound = 4.45 Newtons

  22. Closure • One more law to go. • 12.3 • Cover one thing out of 12.4
