Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Past Workmanship Photography Once upon a time… Since I was a child, I have always been busy with doing something creative. At a certain point (2006) I knew I wanted to do something with it. Industrial Design was the perfect solution to my ever-present desire to create stuff. Secondary school I graduated on 9 July 2009 at “Het Dongemond College” in Raamsdonksveer . I have always been working really hard, because I wanted to do Industrial Design and therefore I had to get my pre-university education.
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Past Workmanship Photography My favorite lesson You can see some pictures of drawings, collages and projects which I have made at secondary school. I really enjoyed this subject because of the freedom I had (to do what I want to do), really emphasize the importance of your own style. How I applied this in the present I got used to the process of creating an idea with very little information. For instance, my final project was called “dag licht”. This was about your own interpretation (could be for example daylight or goodbye light) and you weren’t limited by rules or too much information. Thinking about ideas, illustrating the process in a dummy and working in teams are skills which I have applied this semester. I also developed my teamwork ability during the making of reports. Future plan I am very interested in art history and I already learned the basics at secondary school. I think art history can be an inspiration for the exercises that follow. So I might even choose the assignment DG402 “Modernism in Design” next semester!
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Past Workmanship Photography Memorize moments One of my hobbies is photography. I bought a simple camera in April 2007. From that moment on I like taking pictures. I prefer to take pictures from nature, animals, people and clouds over the sea. I think it is not the camera which takes nice pictures, but it is the person behind the camera! How I applied this in the present I am able to register everything I do with photos. I have heard from several people that it is very important to take pictures of, for example, your project. Future plan I will definitely continue visualizing my process next semester.
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Hurray, ID! At this moment I see myself as a beginning designer. I am very motivated to learn and I definitely made the right choice to choose for this study Industrial Design. I really enjoy it! More about meI am a positive minded person and I can explain this by my showcase. When you would open a booklet of me, you would see everything is quite organized and especially colored! Those curly drawings is something I started doing this year, it is called doodle. Guitar & control freak Furthermore I like to play the guitar and make collages. I could describe myself as a control freak, I have the desire to do everything I do as good as possible. Therefore I had some difficulties in the beginning with the different school system. No grates, no “yes or no”, no checklists etcetera. No panic However, after a while I noticed that the stress I was experiencing wasn’t necessary. I understood the exercise pretty well and delivered a nice result, so I am trying to find a balance between chaos and order. I will explain more about this subject at the assignments part (DG103 T.A.B.). 1 of 2
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Typical me The picture at the left is my typical working area. Laptop including headphone for music, bottle of water: simply everything I need on the table so I can reach it easily. You can also recognize me from my nail art, which will be visible at a couple of pictures in my showcase. Why this structure for my showcase? I kept some keywords or essences in mind while working on my showcase. For example I like to present my own style. So I chose for the curly drawings which are particular for this year, because I travel every day by train and bus for 2 hours to get to the University of Technology. Anyway, I am serious when I am working, but I also need humor or in any case colors. I wanted to make this showcase look professional, but in the same time aesthetically pleasing. So visuals were to me very important, because you can communicate a lot by using visuals. Furthermore I wanted to keep it really simple and easy to use, with a logical structure. I chose for this text box, because I wanted a balance between visuals and text. I forced myself not to write too many irrelevant details and really say the most important things. 2 of 2
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week First contact My first impression of Industrial Design was a brochure in which this study was promoted. There were told many examples and I liked the way that the University of Technology in Eindhoven, really puts ideas into practice. The example which triggered me the most, was the quote “make unbreakable glass for bus shelters!”. I think a lot of designs are based on irritations or trouble, for example the orange juice pack. Dutch Design WeekI had already heard about this event before and I was really interested going there. Luckily the opportunity presented itself this year (pictures at the left)! It really made me think about things I like or totally dislike, so partly this helped me by developing my vision. Designers change the world! I want to make my products easy to use, or at least that it doesn’t take the user a long time to learn how to work with it. I would appreciate it if products are interesting to use, not necessarily with a new technology, but it might be a new experience if a technology from another product is used in a new way. Creating a product which people desire! 1 of 2
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Furthermore it is highly important to me that a product has a nice design, it triggers curiosity of the user. At last I would appreciate that a product is effective, so it really solves a time-costing issue. I think it’s very interesting to help people when they have a problem. Why I chose for the Eiffel tower These pictures fit my idea about product design. It is actually quite simple. I think you will need some basic elements, which will fit every environment. However, the Eiffel tower is already 121 years old, the world around it continuously changes, but it is still appropriate in the modern world. Comparing to design: you don’t have to throw away the entire design, but you can keep some elements. Future plan Next semester I am going to develop, experiment with and investigate my vision. My plan is to compare different designers to each other and then conclude whether or not I like a certain designer. I will start to make a questionnaire, to analyze the work. 2 of 2
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week My growth, never a failure… always a lesson My development as a designer increased, I’ve been through the design process several times and within several time tables. First of all during my project, for half a year. Secondly, in my assignment DG300 User Focus and Perspective, we designed a product while paying attention to the user to a high degree. And thirdly, in one day, at the Dutch Design Week (description can be found at “workshops”). I was really blank at the moment I came here, but since then I learned a lot! I definitely have a better view of what is expected from me and I have some things which I want to do differently in the next semester. Development per competency area 01 Ideas and Concepts 02 Integrating Technology 03 User Focus and Perspective 04 Socio-cultural Awareness 05 Designing Business Processes 06 Self-directed and Continuous Learning 07 Form and Senses 08 Descriptive and Mathematical Modeling 09 Design and Research Processes 10 Teamwork and CommunicationOverall competence of design (summary) awareness blank 1 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 1 Ideas and Concepts I explored this competency area in all my assignments and in my project. I learned that in the beginning you don’t have to think about the technique yet, try to think without limits. Self-assurance is very important in this competency area. Because you have to brainstorm and sometimes the most stupid ideas are a trigger to good ideas, so you have to make sure you say everything you want in a brainstorm session. While brainstorming, I use a mind-map to clarify and structure ideas. For me it works, but in my next semester I want to try out different brainstorm techniques as well. At last, I want to stress the importance of a prototype. When you show a prototype, someone else knows exactly what you mean. Communication by visuals is for me very important, because then the other person can see and feel what you mean. For example, the communication to the coach, he wants to see what you did, instead of reading it in a report. Future plan Next semester I want to try out other brainstorm techniques as well and make the idea generation part within the project more interesting. We had some difficulties with making decisions and therefore we spent too much time in this phase. 2 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 2 Integrating Technology I think I am still a beginner at the technology part. In the project I did some soldering and I tried to work on an electrical circuit (with infra red sensor), but in the end we found out that it was easier to make it with Arduino. Stijn (my projectmate) did an assignment about programming and I am looking forward to learn this as well in the next semester. This competency area is very important, because if you want to make intelligent systems, you should also know the basics of the technology! At DG000 I worked on this competency area, I got an exercise with a bread board, which was really interesting because I had never worked with a bread board before. I also learned about coloring codes from resistors. Most of the time I spent doing experiments. Just trial and error, if it doesn’t work, try another way! I also tried to find an explanation on the internet, but that didn’t work out. So next time I will ask an expert immediately instead of wasting time searching. Future plan I chose for DG200 “Creative Programming for Designers” which will learn me a lot about electronics and the language of programming. 3 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 3 User Focus and Perspective I already have a good understanding of this competency area. I did the assignment DG300 User Focus and Perspective and that made me think about the importance of involving the user in the design process. I also developed this skill within my project. We did some research about our target group and we tried to define them as good as possible. Especially in the last phase of our design process, working towards the final product, we thought a lot about our users and tried to experience the product ourselves. For example we made a life size drawing of how the Touchcase would look. This was a good way to find out for example the height of the Touchcase or how big, where and in which position the hole had to be. Doing a user test is more difficult than I expected, it takes more time than you think beforehand. However the results are quite often very interesting, so therefore it’s worth the time. You have to make sure beforehand that the people are well-informed and know what you expect. Future plan I am going to read the booklet “Interaction Design”, because I want to fine-tune my knowledge about User Focus. 4 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 4 Socio-cultural Awareness I think I learned the most from this competency area while working in teams with people from abroad. For example in the project, we worked with three people. One of them is from China. I noticed that certainly in the beginning I found it really difficult to explain what I meant in English. After a while I got more used to speaking in English and I was able to say what I mean better. That was also the advice of my team mates after we did the team evaluation “speak up some more”. At first I found it hard to explain what I meant and I was satisfied with ideas of others, but later on I spoke up some more. By the way, the upper picture is my name in Chinese! :) It is very important to understand each other properly, and I think in the future I will work in multidisciplinary teams as well. We have to adapt to each other, because you might have different point of view because of the difference between cultures. Anyway, it made me realize (and experience) that there are differences in thinking and doing. Future plan In my next semester I will explore this competency area more in an assignment, which will probably be “Modernism in Design”. I think an easy way to know more about different cultures is the Hofstede Model. 5 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 5 Designing Business Processes I have only a little experience with this competency area. I am aware of the fact that you have to find a way to sell your product in a nice way. A keyword for this competency area is convincement. The question you should ask yourself is: why would a product fail on the market? And then of course try to prevent that! At the project we didn’t focus so much on this part, while it is very important! We had a very nice working prototype, but it collapsed very often the last two weeks before exhibition. We also didn’t really make it a very realistic product. We thought about the costs, but it is still quite expensive to make. So unfortunately it didn’t have that professional appearance as before anymore. I think it is important to imagine the design circle which a product goes through until it is finally bought by a user. Of course the process is not finished when the user buys the product. We have to keep adapting and improving the product to satisfy the wishes of the client, which often change because of new technology and hypes. Future plan In my next semester I want do activities so that I have a better view of the content of this area (I subscribed for the assignment DG501 “Analysing and Modelling NPD”). 6 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 6 Self-directed and Continuous Learning I have to admit that I was already quite good at planning my homework at secondary school, but this school system was in need of an entirely different approach! Normally I had some kind of checklist and I knew when I was finished. On the contrary, now I’m having some troubles with finding the boundary when something is good enough. Anyway, I am satisfied that the staff notices my motivated attitude. I don’t mind working really long at one assignment or exercise, when the result is good. I like to motivate other people to succeed before the deadline and this is something I would like to continue also in the next semester. For instance, at first hand I didn’t have any experience with making buttons at PowerPoint. Then Dylan taught me some basics techniques and later on I already explained this technique to 5 people! So I really like the way that you can learn from each other and share the skills you got! Future plan I want to continue working like I do now. The only thing I want to change is to be more flexible and have more confidence about myself. 7 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 7 Form and Senses I learned how to use layers in Adobe Photoshop CS4. At first I was only able to use some effects to improve the appearance of a photo, but now I can also make lay-outs in Photoshop. It is important to think about the form, because the appearance of a product can change the expectation of the user. If it looks nice, people will buy it. You have to think about interesting colors, size of the buttons, nice materials and so on to satisfy the user’s wishes. In the project I also worked on this part, because of the design I made in Solid Edge. Furthermore I like to doodle (the curly drawings from this lay-out) which partly expresses my identity, style and attitude. Important to mention is the Dutch Design Week. I did a full-day workshop and the starting point was the material. You can read more about it in the tab “workshops”. Future plan During my next semester I am going to do an assignment about Form and Senses. 8 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 8 Descriptive and mathematical modeling Unfortunately this competency area is still not really clear to me. I have some presumptions about it, but don’t know whether or not this is right, so this will definitely be a competency area to put my focus on next semester! However, I think it is important to see the connection between human processes and systems, so that you can adapt the system to the user. For example the picture at the left, it is important to organize every action of the user and the reaction on it. So you could make a block system, with every possible consequence of an action. Furthermore it is quite important to work in an organized way and prove your results with evidence. I subscribed for information about the workshop “Mathematica & Escher” but unfortunately I don’t know when this will be, so I hope to hear this soon. On one hand because I found Escher very interesting, on the other because of the learning experience for this competency area. Future plan In my next semester I hope am going to get a better view of this competency area. 9 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 9 Design and research processes Almost every exercise demands another process. You have to think about what is the focus on at that particular project. For example whether or not you are developing a whole new product or adapting a product. The target group may also be different and therefore you would have to take into account different design aspects. So there aren’t only different processes, I think this competency area is also about being structured and solving a problem. Research means to me analyzing, gaining more information and later on specifying what you got. We used this approach within our project, which was really from the point of problem solving. We went to the Chocolate Museum and analyzed the environment, we set up some problems and then chose requirements we found important and in this way we created a product! Anyway, we live in a complex world, a bit of a chaos and we need some strategies to solve a design problem. You can do that by using scenarios or making a model. Future plan Experiment with a different approach in a design process. For example do the brainstorm differently. 10 of 13
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week 10 Teamwork and communication Teamwork is one of the most important skills you need as a designer. You have to be able to work and communicate with your team members, but also explain your idea to other stakeholders, for example coaches or the client. I am glad with this practical school system, because now I really experience how to work with other people. You have to take in mind that not everyone has the same approach, attitude, culture or the same thoughts as yourself. Sometimes you have to adapt and make compromises. In a project group you need a team leader, who is independent about making decisions. I prefer a visual way of communicating my idea, because then you have something to discuss and you know for sure that you have the same idea in mind. The project team work went pretty well, sometimes we had some communication troubles, but overall it was a nice cooperation. Furthermore I added a picture of technology, because I will need to ask other people or expert next semester to help me with improving this skills. Future plan I want to speak up more, say more about may ideas instead of agree with others. I want to keep my social and cooperative skills, but be a bit more secure about myself. 11 of 13

Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week • Skills • This semester I focused on some aspects. • I learned that sketching is a very important tool to communicate your ideas (for example during group brainstorm sessions). • However, I would like to turn my drawing skills to a higher level. I already spent some time at home drawing, but I am not completely satisfied with the results, so I want to go on with this next semester. This was also the advice of the assigner from T.A.B. (feedback can be found at the tab “assignments”). I also learned how to work with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and how to use layers. At first I was only capable of changing pictures a bit, e.g. improve the contrast. But now I am aware of more functions to change pictures and I also learned how to make a lay-out, poster or flyer. Process activities Envisioning / transforming society Exploring / validating in context Making: synthesising / concretising • Thinking: analysing / abstracting • The focus this semester was most of all the thinking phase. Secondly was thinking, but next semester I definitely want to shift more between the four activities! 1 of 2

Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week DG000 Competency-centred learning Information - read the report, if you like DG000 was about getting to know the school system and introducing the competency areas. I couldn’t have missed this assignment, it was absolutely an eye-opener to understand the basics of this study. Approach Every day was about one competency. We were working on it every Tuesday and Wednesday the whole day. In the morning theory by colleges and in the afternoon a group-exercise. Most important feedback for me - read all feedback, if you like “The cover, lay-out and appearance of your booklet convey that at the moment you are more of a text person than a visualiser.” So in this showcase I tried to work on my visual side. For me, I think it is more interesting to read a school booklet if there are visuals attached, so why won’t I put visuals in my reports as well? 1 of 7
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Reflection From Diana Vinke I got a really interesting feedback for my DG000 booklet (Competency centred learning). At first I thought I didn’t do anything well and I wasn’t really satisfied with the feedback, because I spent a lot of time making this booklet. But after I read the feedback a couple of times, I noticed some interesting points which would improve my reports or reflections for the next time! For instance, try to visualize more. I just had to learn how to cope with criticism and feedback. Anyway, I did a test about learning styles. The outcome was that I am more a visual than a textual person. Actually, I think this outcome is based on how I PREFER to get the information, instead of how I do it. I remember information better when I see visuals, but for myself I like to write a lot to explain to the reader exactly what I mean. I am working on improving my reports. I have to find a balance between visuals and text, detailed and abstract. I also had an imbalance between descriptive and reflective writing, so I tried to improve that as well in this showcase. 2 of 7
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week DG103 T.A.B. Information - read the report, if you likeT.A.B. stands for Taal (Language), Ambacht (Skills) and Beeld (Design). This assignment was a very interesting one to develop your identity as a designer and let your creativity flow. Your vision, it was all about yourself. Thinking about what makes you happy in life and really do what you want to do. So at the beginning I thought of being creative: I like drawing, painting and making collages but I don’t take the time to do this… Now I did! Once we had a drawing lesson and I found out that if you draw a lot, then you’re able to improve your skills at short-term. So I will do this next semester! Approach You had to determine a project goal for yourself. The only requirements were to deliver a final result and a process description. At first I started drawing and painting, because I really like those things and later on I decided what I wanted to do: dare myself! Try to do something different than the normal me. Then I came up with the chaos project, instead of planning and working organized, I tried to make chaos including chaotic approach (without planning what to do). This was harder than I seems, because I sill organized the chaos. Developing the idea of chaos was really interesting, because I didn’t have a structure a all. 3 of 7
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Most important feedback for me - read all feedback, if you like “Do painting for itself, not related to a goal, not to prove something. Otherwise it can or will soon become an instrument, a questionable form of order!” and about my attitude: “Very eager to learn and having or getting more and more freedom in dealing with a problem or assignment. Fresh and open attitude. Curious and alert.” Reflection The most important thing at T.A.B. was that you didn’t have to say beforehand why you did it, but just start! It was very interesting to start doing something, instead of thinking about it first and explain it by arguments. This approach was totally new for me and therefore very interesting to experience for one time. Actually, it made me realize that planning is a useful tool, but you NEED chaos in order to get to a result. I have to cope with the fact that sometimes an exercise won’t be as clear as I want it to be, so that I have to give my own twist to for example a report! 4 of 7
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week This assignment also helped me in a personal way. I really like to play guitar, but I didn’t make time for it anymore, which I was not happy with. From now on I try to make time for playing guitar more often, because I really like it and it’s a bad thing not doing it. So this assignment did not only helped me in a designer way to develop myself, but also in a personal way! For me, the process was more important than the deliverable. Of course I needed the deliverable, to go through the process, but my focus was on the approach including trial-and-error. This is also important in design processes, because you first have to broaden your horizon before you can specify to your final concept. 5 of 7

The first three weeks were individual and the last three weeks we had to do in pairs and/or with four people. This went quite well, but sometimes it was hard to arrange a meeting. • Most important feedback for me - read all feedback, if you likeI did not really receive feedback for this assignment. Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Reflection In the first meeting we immediately heard that this was a heavy duty assignment, that’s absolutely true! It was a lot of work to make all the exercises every week, but I can say I learned a lot from it. It was actually a kind of mini-project to really let you experience how important it is to involve the user in your design process. For example I learned in this assignment about prototyping. I thought prototypes were highly developed and on top of that working things with a lot of electronics. But I learned that prototypes don’t have to be working (Wizard of Oz effect, also experienced this in my project “Enriched Exhibition”) and moreover can be from paper for example. In my next semester I want to create more prototypes, because this is an easy way of communicating your idea. In this semester we chose for a movie to explain the essence, but next time I will try to focus more on the doing part instead of thinking and discussing. At last I want to say that working in pairs works really motivated. We set deadlines for ourselves and you have to do it then, because otherwise the other person also fails. 7 of 7
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week DPA11 Enriched Exhibition read the report, if you like read all feedback, if you like Our project was about creating an interesting and interactive product for the Chocolate Museum in Cologne. We had to design for the second floor, the history floor. Our target group was especially elderly people, but our product is also interesting for children (with their grand parents). We started with 4 people, but unfortunately one team member quit the study after a few weeks. Furthermore it was difficult that not everybody had the same approach and motivation. Concept description Wouldn’t it be great if you can touch the objects in a museum? We developed a product for the Chocolate Museum in Cologne, which makes the experience more interactive! You can control the object by a replica under the real object. We limited ourselves by some gestures, because we had to be realistic. We chose for lifting up (get information about the weight and some facts) and rotating. By rotation the visitor sees a timeline at the screen, in which he can go back and forward in time, really see the evolution of an object. 1 of 3
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week Coach feedback “Focus on technology and form & senses next semester and sharpen your individual profile. You have learned a lot in analyzing a existing situations, finding the problems and transforming this knowledge into a design brief. You have a sense for the user. If you can improve to combine these abilities with a better structured design process you'll develop fine. Keep your positive setting and sensitive, social qualities on the one hand and try to sharpen you individual profile as a designer on the other hand. Trust your abilities and to a certain extend: don't care what the other do - go for your creation, take decisions and don't hesitate to look for expertise and support.” Exhibition We did not only try to make people curious with our concept, but also with a movie and visuals. For example the upper picture, is a print screen of the movie and people were laughing about the movie. But this was part of the marketing technique, because if people watch a movie, you can ask if they would like an explanation! Because they are already interested because of the visuals they see. 2 of 3

Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact Present Identity Vision Growth Skills Activities AssignmentsProject WorkshopsIDentity Week DJC01 Setting goals for your development Try to set smart goals for yourself. DJC03 Meeting skills Get the best out of a meeting, you have to be well-prepared when you enter a meeting. Most important thing I learned was to set a time limit for myself, to push myself work harder and finish the discussion on time. Furthermore you need an agenda with the plans or subjects you want to discuss. This workshop was really interesting because of the nice balance between theory and practice. DJC04 Writing your reportThe only thing which was interesting for me was the checklist with the points which has to be in a report. DJC07 Information brokering There are more possibilities than I knew, to find information. For example to find scientific reports in a library. IDWORKS106 Photography and showcase Already at the beginning of this study I was aware of the fact to take pictures. It is not only important to prove what you did, but also for myself it is important and fun to see what you achieved. I can better keep track of myself and my development when I see visuals. 1 of 2

Only three people went to the feedback, so we had a lot of time to discuss it with each other. Everything they said to me I took into consideration and used it to improve the quality of my showcase. Some examples: don’t use too many colors, make a mind map to create your showcase, make three versions of your logo (colored, black and white, inverse) and your showcase has to be easy to use, also for people who don’t want to spend so much time on watching your showcase. Your own style, but keep it simple! Workshop Dutch Design WeekI attended a workshop at the Dutch Design week, Thursday 22 October 2009 from 10.00 till 17.00 hours. It was about getting to know the design process in one day. You received a material and target group and with that information you had to create a product. As you can see we started with experiencing the 2 of 2

It really expresses what I like, for example: colors, peace (Buddha), memories, future, humor, clouds, sunshine and art. The next text is based on the comparison of myself at the beginning of the year versus now (finished my first semester). What goals have I reached? In the beginning I didn’t know what to do with the Personal Development Plan, how could I possibly know what to do upcoming half year? Now I certainly know on which part I want to work next semester. I’ve learned about this school system of continuous learning and I found out how to handle it. In the tab “future” you can find my goals for semester B. My project coach didn’t spend so much time on the Personal Development Plan, the only feedback I got, was that it looked nice, next time divide the text in chapters to find easier what you’re looking for. Therefore I didn’t change my PDP anymore, the nicer it is now to read my thoughts from half a year ago. It’s funny to read that I was already thinking about time-related things, I quote myself: “The world shouldn’t stress out so much”. I used this essence in my assignment DG103 T.A.B.!
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact My first semester went pretty well, I am confident with the things I have achieved. But of course, there are some things which I would like to improve or do differently next time. So hereby you can read my goals for the next semester (or maybe even longer). I ordered them randomly. 1 Learn within one month how to make a booklet in In design, because it is probably easier to use than word and it looks more professional. 2 Learn about technology, especially programming in Arduino. For example turning light on and off by sensors 3 Make a website for my next showcase, probably using HTML or flash. 4 Buy a dummy and continue taking notes and work concentrated like I do now. 5 Clarify my identity by comparing designers and find out which part I like. 6 Don’t hesitate to ask questions to coach or experts. 1 of 4
Showcase B1.1 MarjoleinWintermans HomePastPresentFutureContact 7 Continue learning now to use Solid Edge (every week one tutorial), so that I can make 3d sketches easy and quick. 8 Read booklet Interaction Design, to know even more about User Focus and Perspective (this is not the first priority, because I already know a lot, but just to sharp the focus). 9 Start learning from the Adobe booklet (8 programs are explained). 10 Try to be more visual, balance between detail and abstract. This is very good to communicate your idea. 11 Improve drawing skills, because I like to draw, but it is also a communication tool. 12 Practice with making lay-outs in Photoshop. 13 Focus more on my individual profile. 14 Go on drawing and painting. 15 Ask for an individual coach meeting, because now I didn’t have an individual meeting at all this semester. 2 of 4

Vinke - assigner: “Focus on how to communicate your understanding of the process activities, and your ability to perform them. And above all: how to communicate the essence of what you have achieved. A final advice concerns ‘visualising’: explore / experiment with communicating your achievements and process in a truly visual way.” T.A.B. DG103 Advice F.J.M. Franssen - assigner:“Go on finding out what chaos can mean for yourself. Experiment with it, and becoming aware that chaos and order belong together; they need each other. Go on drawing and painting. Do painting for itself, not related to a goal, not to prove something. Otherwise it can or will soon become an instrument, a questionable form of order!” User focus and perspective DG300 Advice M.M. Bekker - assigner:“Apply the user focus methods to future design projects and explore variations.” 3 of 4

Trust your abilities and to a certain extend: don't care what the other do - go for your creation, take decisions and don't hesitate to look for expertise and support.” 4 of 4
