IF SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED----TRUE OR FALSE? Dr. Jobe Martin Biblical Discipleship Ministries www.biblicaldiscipleship.org
Bibliography Most of this study comes from the volumes of Systematic Theology by Louis Sperry Chafer, published by Dallas Seminary Press, 1948
THE BIBLE SAYS THAT MAN IS TOTALLY CORRUPT • His intellect: 2 Cor. 4:4; Rom. 1:28 • His conscience: 1 Tim. 4:2 • His will: Rom. 1:18, 28 • His heart: Eph. 4:18; Jer. 17:9 • His total being: Romans 1-8 • The penalty for this total corruption is eternal separation from God=HELL
THE PENALTY FOR SIN • Death: Rom. 6:23 • Second Death: Rev. 21:8 • Endless Punishment: 2 Thess. 1:8,9 • Black Darkness Forever: Jude 12,13 • Everlasting Disgrace: Dan. 12:2 • Eternal Fire: Matt. 25:41 • SEPARATION FROM GOD FOREVER!
THE PENALTY FOR SIN FOR BELIEVERS • Loss of fellowship with God: 1 John 1:6 • Loss of fellowship with Believers: Matt 18 • Discipline from the church: 1 Cor. 5:4,5 • Chastisement from the Lord: Heb. 12:6 • Habitual sin-unto-death: 1 John 5:16,17; 1 Corinthians 11:30 • All to Jesus I surrender, I surrender all!!
THE REMEDY FOR SIN FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT CHRIST • Proverb 28:13:“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” • Romans 10:9: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
THE REMEDY FOR SIN FOR BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST • 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” • Confess=“to agree with God” • There are children of God and children of the devil (1 Jn. 3:10; Jn.8:44; Rom 9:8) • WHOSE CHILD ARE YOU?
CAN A TRUE CHRISTIAN FALL FROM GRACE? • Are “Grace” and “Salvation” the same? • “Grace” is unmerited love and favor from God, in one aspect, and the power to obey God in its other meaning. • “Salvation” is the saving of one’s soul from hell as a result of sin to eternal life with the Lord Jesus Christ. • Grace and Salvation are not the same!!!
SALVATION: A SOUL IS SAVED FROM SIN AND DEATH • Saved from the eternal penalty of sin at the moment one confesses and repents of their sins and puts their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. • Saved in the present from the power of sin. Christians have victory over all sin! Christians do not have to sin. • Saved in the future from the presence of sin. Oh what a glorious day!!!
FOR TRUE BELIEVERS IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: • Colossians 2:13: “And you, being dead in your sins…hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses….” • “Having forgiven”Gk=Aorist tense=the forgiveness happened at a point in time in the past and the effects last eternally. • “All”includes everything, excludes nothing.
ALL BELIEVER’S SINS ARE FORGIVEN AND FORGOTTEN! • Hebrews 10:14,17: “For by one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified….And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” • 2 Cor. 5:21: “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”=Positional Sanctification or
JUSTIFICATION • The subtraction of our sins and the addition of the righteousness of Christ. • God took our sins, (all future at the time of the death of Christ) and put them on Jesus and took His righteousness and put it on us. • At the point of salvation we are declared righteous by God as He looks at us through the Lord Jesus Christ.
DECLARED RIGHTEOUS • Being declared righteous by God and actually becoming righteous in my daily living are two different things and we constantly confuse them. • So do we establish or prove our eternal security by maintaining good works??? • What happens at the point of salvation?

Is getting or keeping myeternallife dependent upon my good or bad works? • See: Acts 15:8-11; Romans 3:21-24; 2Timothy 1:8,9; Titus 3:4-6; Eph. 2:8,9 • “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. . . .”Rom.3:23,24
Is getting or keeping my eternallife dependent upon my good or bad works? • “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. . .which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by His grace….” • Titus 3:3-8
Is getting or keeping my eternal life dependent upon my good or bad works? • “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: It is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”Ephesians 2:8,9
What about those who “fall away” • “They went out from us, but they were not of us: for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.”1 John 2:19
If you could “lose your salvation” could you repent and get it back? • “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened. . .if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.” Hebrews 6:4,6
Can I know that I have eternal life? • “God hath given to us eternallife, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life: and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things I have written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, . . .” 1 John 5:11-13
ARE YOU ONE OF JESUS’ SHEEP? • Jesus says: “Mysheep hear My voice and I know [ginosko] them and they follow Me: and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish,…” John 10:27,28 • But at the judgment Jesus says: “I never knew [ginosko] you: Depart from Me….” Matt. 7:23 • Could Jesus say He never knew you if He once knew you as a “sheep?” No Way!!!!
THE HOLY SPIRIT HIMSELF IS THE SEAL OF OUR SALVATION • Eph. 1:12-14: “That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Christ. In Whom ye also trusted after that ye heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation: in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.” to next slide
IN THE SYMBOLISM OF SCRIPTURE A SEAL SIGNIFIES: • A finished transaction: Jer. 32:9ff; John 17:4-26; • Ownership: Jer. 32:11-12; 2 Tim. 2:19 • Security: Esther 8:8; Dan 6:17; Eph 4:30 • “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”Ephesians 4:30
IF I SAY, “GOD, GET OUT OF MY LIFE” WILL HE CANCEL MY PROMISE OF ETERNAL LIFE? • Answer: Only if Christ and the Holy Spirit fail in their 24 hour a day intercession on my behalf!!!!! • “Jesus ever liveth to makeintercession for them”(believers in Jesus). Hebrews 7:25 • “But the Spirititself maketh intercessionfor us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26
Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit: • Cannot fail in their round-the-clock intercession on our behalf! • We can do no sin (which includes attempting to kick Jesus out of our life, if He truly resides in us) that is beyond their intercession!
WHEN DOES ETERNAL LIFE BEGIN? • “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”John 3:36
WHEN DOES ETERNAL LIFE BEGIN? • “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24 • “Everlasting life” = IN THE PRESENT! • “No condemnation” = IN THE FUTURE!
ONCE SAVED-ALWAYS SAVED • “ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED” (ETERNAL SECURITY) DEPENDS COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY ON THE PERSERVERANCE AND FAITH- FULLNESS OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST, NOT IN ANY WAY ON ME!
Those saved “shall never perish” “no man can pluck them out of God’s hands” Jn 10:28 • Nothing can separate a saved person from the love of our Savior! Rom. 8:35-39 • The Lord Jesus “…shall confirm you to the end….” 1 Cor. 1:7-9 • “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” Phil. 1:6
Christians are “sanctified by God the Father and preservedin Jesus Christ” Jude 1 • “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto His heavenly kingdom: to Whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 2Tim4:18 • “For by one offering He hath perfectedforever them that are sanctified.” Heb10:14 • “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” Rom 8:1

Jesus “is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless….” Jude 24 • Jesus said, “…him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37-39 • “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13
Promise Purpose Seal Guarantee Intercession Advocacy Love Regeneration Faith Discipline Power Sin-payment The basis for once truly saved, always eternally saved is Jesus Christ’s:
Praises be to our Almighty Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: • by Whom our salvation is kept and in Whom our eternal security rests!!!!! • “O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: because His mercy endureth forever.” Ps. 118:1
ARE THERE PASSAGES THAT TEACH AGAINST ETERNAL SALVATION? • Romans 11: speaks of Jews and Gentiles corporately, federally, as a group of people • “But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles.” (Romans 11:13) • Jews as a people are broken off the vine • Gentiles as a people are grafted in the vine • TO BE CONTINUED…….!
