The Set Designer • Who does a set designer discuss sets with? • Why? • What do set designers do before setting to work? • How do drawings help them? • What factors must they consider during the creative process? • What sources do they use for inspiration and research?
Design Requirements • The setting needs to provide space for movement of both actors and set pieces. • The set should inform the audience of time, place, culture, social and economic factors. • The set should convey the mood and style of the play. • It must be usable and safe!
Types of Sets • Permanent • Unit • Periaktoi or Prism • Box • Curtain • Minimal
Permanent Set • Stays in place for entire production. • Elements such as props and set pieces can be added but the basic structure remains the same.
Box Set • Most common type of set • 2 or 3 walls, several windows and at least 1 door.
Unit Set • Several pieces that can come on and off. • Good for plays with many scene changes.
Minimal Set • Usually uses folding flats that can be used to hide furniture
Periaktoi or Prism Set • 3 sided flats that are painted differently. • Can be moved. • Flats can be inserted to add different elements.
Curtain Set • Has some flats such as doors and windows. • Uses back curtain as part of set.
