Services and Support • biopharmaceutical development program • a high-performance IT center dedicated to biomedical research and informatics • advanced technology programs: • genomics • proteomics • imaging • nanotechnology • histopathology • molecular biology • clinical trial laboratory services
Example: Peptide Synthesis • Peptides synthesized on a Beckman Biomek FX liquid-handling robot • Synthesis on porous beads in filter bottom microtiter plates • Typical yield: 1uM or 1mg of an 18-mer peptide • Typically over 90% of peptides are over 90% ‘pure’ (i.e. over 90% of mass migrates as a single peak when analyzed by mass spec) • Cost per peptide less than $15.00
Process • This a cost recover effort • initially requester discusses a project with the appropriate SAIC-Frederick scientist • A cost estimate will be provided that includes the cost plus overhead (no profit) • Requester accepts cost estimate or not • NCI reviews request and approves or disapproves the work
Government Agencies • SAIC-Frederick services and support are available under the Economy Act • Other government agencies enter into inter-agency agreements to facilitate the transfer of allocated funds • NCI-Frederick currently has Interagency Agreements with the following Agencies: • USAMRIID • USAMRMC • USAG • USDA • FDA

Work for Others • WFO is defined as services provided to non-Federal Government entitie(s) by an FFRDC • WFO authority provided in FAR 35.017-3 “Using an FFRDC” • Services provided must be unique and not compete with the private sector (FAR 35.017) • Services in support of primary sponsor take precedence over WFO requests
WFO • SAIC-F services available to perform WFO are made available if there is sufficient capacity to accommodate the request while still meeting Government demands for service • WFO is not conducted under a subcontract; therefore federal flow-down contract provisions do not apply • Services performed under WFO are not anticipated to involve research, development, or demonstration, i.e., services
WFO • WFO services are not collaborations; no potential IP development anticipated • If IP is developed under the WFO Agreement, such IP will be governed by the IP provisions of the SAIC-F OTS Prime Contract

300K Cancer Gene Sequencing Microarray • Sequences all exons, splice sites, and promoters in all 90 genes known to be mutated in cancer • Sequences 300kb of target DNA • Developed in collaboration with Affymetrix
Virus Microarray • Designed to identify and detect all known mammalian and avian pathogenic viruses • Detects both viral RNA and DNA • 10,000+ features (10-20 features per virus) • Over 600 viruses represented • Human and avian flu viruses represented as tiling paths • Also designed for detection of ‘new’ viruses that may arise via recombination • Detection limit: 20 virus particles • Array quality: • cv less than 4% • Over 98% reproducibility of detection
miRNA Microarray • 1500 features • cv less than 5% • All known (confirmed and putative) human, rodent, drosophila, C. elegans, zebra fish, xenopus, chicken, and arabidposis miRNAs • Content and architecture under continuing development • Ongoing miRNA discovery efforts for both human and mouse
Monoclonal Antibody Microarray • Over 1200 monoclonal antibodies • cv less than 5% • All antibodies validated by Western • Ongoing effort to validate all antibodies by mass spec • Dual color labeling • Direct labeling of protein samples
