MALAWI NPPO ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE • International Airports in South and Central, where Plant Inspectors are based and report to the PPO, south and central • Inspectors at boarder posts report to their respective PPO • PPO office also responsible for issuance of phytosanitary certificates • Divisional Crops Officers report on whatever takes place at farmer level
Data available • Army worm • Over 100 Pheromone traps. • The Divisional Crops Officers in the three regions responsible for collecting the data from the different areas and sending it to National Research Coordinator for decision making. • Report are submitted at monthly interval • Red locust • Surveillance trips are conducted every year before in traditional egg laying sites. • Lake Chilwa in the southern region and Ngolowindo, Salima in the central region.
Capacity Building • Internet infrastructure. ( Inadequate Electronic communication structures) • Internet – Departmental Headquarters • The Department of Research has one internet terminal, which in most cases, is only available for use by the Director. • Need to improve on the accessibility of internet facility to Plant Protection Officers in the different regions. 2. Internet – Coordinator • The National Research Coordinator has an internet terminal which needs to be connected to the regional offices 3. Government Wide Area Network (GWAN) (Proposal) • Currently there is a proposal for a Government Wide Area
Other Capacity building needs • Train staff on quarantine, produce inspection and epidemiology • Train staff on IPPC • Infrastructure development. • There is a need to improve on laboratory equipment
