  1. Fighting in 5 Dimensions

  2. Attacked from Cyberspace

  3. Battlespace 14 13 The area, dimension or environment determined by the maximum capabilities to acquire and engage an adversary

  4. 5 Dimensional Battlespace 12 • Space – (The First Three) Length, Width & Height or Depth • Maneuver elements are physical • Maneuver in space is measured in distance and the control of key terrain is critical

  5. 5 Dimensional Battlespace 11 • Time – a “nonspace continuum” where events occur in an irreversible succession from the past through the future • Maneuver elements are intangible and exist only as a mental image • Maneuver in time is measured in speed and the exploitation of opportunities is critical

  6. 5 Dimensional Battlespace 10 • Cyberspace – a notional “information space” where people interact with “human space” and machines • Maneuver elements are the “fruits” of devices designed for the interaction • Maneuver in cyberspace is measured in knowledge and the ability to acquire, deprive and manipulate information is critical

  7. Humanspace vs. Cyberspace 9 • Humanspace– where humans live and interact • Has physical dimensions • Comprised of Space and Time

  8. Humanspace vs. Cyberspace 8 • Cyberspace – a notional information space where humans interact, not only with one another, but with machines • Intangible and limitless • Comprised of Cyberspace • Where weaker adversaries can seek refuge

  9. Human Sensing Dimensional Barrier Separates humanspace from cyberspace Anything that prevents an adversary from being acquired or engaged May be physical Walls, fences, bushes May be intangible Darkness, fog or smoke May be notional Anonymity 7

  10. Spatial Premises of Advanced Battlespace 6 Data SensorsData Fusion CyberspaceA dimension in which information isthe predominant influence Human SensingDimensional Barrier Stealth HumanspaceTraditional physical dimensionswhere humans interact To fight in 5-D Battlespace we must eitherenter cyberspace or force the adversary into humanspace!

  11. A is now far from B ••A B ••A B ••A B ••A B A is now close to B How far is safe? How close is dangerous? 5 Spatial Expansion Spatial Contraction Spatial Warping of Modern Battlespace

  12. We’re not going to be first and we’re not alone! 4 Cell Phones, Digital Pagers, PersonalDigital Assistants, TV Tuners, GarageDoor Openers, Remote Car Alarms, E-Mail, Wireless Internet, Electronic Car Door Locks, Personal Radio Transmitter/Receivers, Etc.

  13. What Will it Take? 3 • See in the dark • Track in the electromagnetic spectrum • See through the walls • Remote listening capabilities • Shut down cell phones • Open electronic garage doors • Open/Lock electronic car doors • Cyber-Command Post • Increase situational awareness for Incident Commanders • Create a common operational picture for EOC • Create a virtual reach back for subject matter experts • Create a feed back loop • Changes intelligence from a “push” system to a “push-pull”

  14. Dominating Cyberspace 2 • Recognizing the existence and implications of cyberspace becomes a tactical imperative • Retooling, not rearming will be required • Rules of engagement will be based on privacy issues rather than force issues • Tactics in cyberspace will be focused on gaining understanding and knowledge. • Strategies will be focused on separating the relevant from the volume. • Cherished practices will be challenged, especially the C2 function

  15. So what are the implications?
