GOsC versus QAA The GOsC now ‘employs’ the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) to conduct the triennial or quinquennial reviews
Review Rationale The review is based on the Self Evaluation Document (SED) which is prepared by the institution This contains detail on the following areas
Statement of overall course aims Aims and outcomes Curricula Governance and Management Teaching and Learning Learning Resources Achievement Student Progression Student Support and Guidance Assessment Maintenance of Standards and Quality Enhancement

Why so many individuals? The SED should reflect wide consultation and avoid blandness Some members were involved at every stage whilst others offered consultative views Every level of the school was represented, from Student to Senior Management
What is the SED? • A reflective document where we identify strengths and weakness as well as setting out plans for dealing with these • Allows the Visitors to gain a snapshot of the school before their visit • We are also using the SED to give direction to our development
The Process – Stage 1 The SED and supportive documents are sent to the Co-ordinator and Visitors Visitors request any supportive documents via the Institutional Contact (PF) Our SED was submitted electronically on the 12th September
The Process – Stage 2 Co-ordinator visits the school for a meeting with the Senior and Middle Managers Arranged for 13th October 2005
The Process – Stage 3 Visitors and Co-ordinator Inspection 15th, 16th and 17th November 2005 First two days are for the inspection Last day is for reflection and discussion / feedback
What happens during the visit? Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th November 2005 • Visitors will observe some classes • Visitors will observe some clinic sessions • Visitors will meet with students, faculty and staff both formally and informally • Visitors will read documentation not already seen
What happens during the visit? Thursday 17th November 2005 • Private meeting of Visitors • Feedback session with Senior Management and Department Heads
The Process – Stage 4 The final outcome and report is prepared and issued to the institutions in the early part of 2006
What can I do to help? • Read and understand the key areas of the SED • Familiarise yourself with your course content, running order and expected outcomes • Prepare lesson plans based on the simple proforma • Lecturers and Assistants must prepare jointly for the lectures – ensuring a good coherent session
What can I do to help? • Be aware of where your subject area fits in the overall curriculum and alignment with the overall aims and outcomes of the ESO • Ensure correct and professional use of Assistants • Clearly state at the beginning of a session (class or clinic) what your objectives for that day are and the sum up at the end of a session in the same context • Be conversant with the S2K and how it can be linked with our curriculum • Be continually smart and professional in demeanour
What about Clinic Tutors? As lecturers but also … • Must be aware of the progression stage of students throughout the year – we can help with this • Must prepare their tutorage in line with the stage of progression of the students • Be continually smart and professional in demeanour • Be aware of the GOsC Code of Conduct and how it applies to the Clinic
What will the Visitors do? • Visitors will not interrupt teaching or tutoring • They will not appraise individual tutors – they are there to appraise the student experience • They will meet with lecturers and assistants prior to lectures to discuss session objectives and intended benefits to the students • They will work in pairs – except in the clinic due to space constraints
What are they looking at ? • Quality of teaching and learning opportunities offered to students • Correlation of these with the broad aims and outcomes of the relevant part of the programme
