The Common Core is not a curriculum or a teaching guide. It is an outline of ELA and Math SKILLS (standards) that all students should master at each grade level, K – 12.
Why Move to the Common Core? • College and Career Readiness – the new national norm • Workplace reading exceeds 12th grade complexity (Stenner, Koons, & Swartz) • K-12 texts have trended downward in difficulty in the last half century (Chall, Conard, & Harris, 1977)
Shifts in Instruction • Focus on Process • Increase Text Complexity • Higher Level Discussions around Text • Assignments for a Purpose • Increase in Writing with a Purpose
ELA Standards • More Non-fiction • Focus on Evidence • “Staircase” of Text Complexity • Speaking and Listening • Literacy in Content Areas
Math Standards Two types of standards: 1.) Mathematical Practice (how students are able to apply and extend math principles) 2.) Mathematical Content (what students know about math) The two are linked together while students are learning
Math Content • Greater Focus • Coherence • Skills, Understanding & Application • Emphasis on Practices
Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • Model with mathematics
Mathematical Practices 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
