  1. Essential Question What were the major problems that led to the fall of Rome?

The Provinces • Lands Rome took over were called provinces. • The empire got many products (and taxes) from these provinces. • In return, Rome provided them with roads, aqueducts, a legal system, etc.. slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves slaves

  3. Slavery • Rome also took people from the provinces as slaves. • Slaves had no rights or protections and had to do anything their owner’s told them. • Some were trained as gladiators and forced to fight to the death. • This led to many people in the empire being very angry at Rome.

  4. Republic vs Empire • Republic – a government ruled by a group, usually has voting • Empire – An area ruled by a single leader who has total power. Hmm… which of these would be better to live in?

  7. Choice 1 • Your country is running low on food. What will you do? • Take all the food and divide it up evenly to all the people. • Let people keep what they have. • Take all the food, give the army what they need and divide the rest.

  8. Choice 2 • Your nation is about to be attacked, what will you do? • Ask for volunteers to join the army. • Force all adult men to join the army. • Force everyone to join the army.

  9. The Fall of Rome

  10. What happened? • Many former enemies (barbarians) moved into the empire. • High taxes were needed to bribe them which made many people angry. • The emperor couldn’t keep them all under control and violence grew.

  11. In the end the Roman Empire divided into two parts. • The Eastern part (where Constantinople was) became the Byzantine Empire and lasted another 1,000 years. • The Western part (where Rome was) fell apart and was not reunified for 100s of years.

Modern Influences • Language – Latin is the basis of Spanish, French, Italian and sort of English. • Government – the US follows the model of the Roman Republic. • Religion – Christianity was born in the Empire and grew there quickly. • Citizenship – our ideas of citizens as those who serve their country grew out of Roman ideals.
