OER and EPE Teaching Staff José Cândido (WavEC) Degree in Oceanography/Meteorology at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). José started his research activity initially focused on wave climate and wave energy resource assessment and afterwards on modeling of wave energy devices. At WavEC he is researcher and manager of offshore renewable energy projects, in particular TROPOS (Development of Multi-Purpose Offshore Platforms). Teresa Simas (WavEC) Coordinator of the Environmental Department Degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries at the Universidade do Algarve and masters and PhD in Environmental Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Teresa is the coordinator of the environmental team and research projects on marine environmental assessment.

HestartedhisPhdrecently in thefieldofpublic policies at ISCPT, LisbonTechn. University. • Nuno Matos has many years of experience as a team leader with commercial background. He created the Public Policies and Dissemination Department at WavEC which he coordinates. He developed extensive experience in public administration interaction with ocean energy. Alex Raventos Degree in Industrial Engineering at the UniverstitatPolitecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain). Post-graduate diploma in Sustainable Energy Systems by the MIT-Portugal program. Alex Raventos is responsible for the socio-economic research area at the Public Policies and Dissemination Department of WavEC. He has extensive experience in strategic and economic studies for energy companies and governmental bodies.

  11. OER - Objectives • Put the student in contact with: • Ocean environment and habitat • Wave and Tidal resources characterization and measurement; • OTEC and Salinity gradient resources and technology; • Site selection for wave and tidal farms and GIS tools.

OER - Outcomes • Understand the relevance of main physical mechanisms in the ocean • Understand the main biological processes that may affect or be affected by ocean energy devices. • Be familiar to the concept of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and Salinity Gradient Conversion (SG); • Be familiar with the statistic description of waves and currents • Use the statistical information to make evaluation of the energy resource • Use of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) in site selection characterization

OER - Content • Ocean Energy Resource 1 (OER1) • Introduction to the ocean environment (ocean water, geology, circulation, stratification, habitat, economy) • Ocean Energy Resource 2 (OER2) • Ocean surface waves • Ocean tidal currents • Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) • Ocean salinity gradient energy resource (SG) • Site selection and characterization for ocean energy systems

OER - Assessment • 2 tests (OER 1 and OER 2) or 1 exam – 60% • 2 assignment – 40% • OER 1 assignment together with EPE 1 & 2 • Dates: • OER1 test: 31/3 at 9:00 • Presentation assignment OER1 28/4 at 10:30 • OER2 test: 26/5 at 9:00 (Waves) and 10:30 (Tidal) • Exam: 3/6 at 109:00 • Presentation assignment OER 2 at 27/5 at 10:30.

  17. EPE - Objectives • Put the student in contact with: • The economics of ocean energy (costs, project financing, market development); • The role and processes of public policies and their relevance for market development • Environmental concerns, constraints and processes.

OER 1 and EPE 1 &2 assignments • For a given island data will be given on • Wave, wind and tidal current resources • Bathimetry and type of ocean bottom soil • Economic activities (fishing effort, leisure, etc.) • Infrastructures (electrical grid, ports and harbours, roads, towns) • Maritime traffic and routes • Protected areas

  25. OER 1 and EPE 1 &2 assignments • You will be requested to: • Characterize a number of ocean habitats; • Undertake an Maritime Spatial Planning exercise; • Undertake an Economic and Environmental Planning exercise under some constraints that allow to maximize the socio-economic benefit for the island; • Advise on the feed-in tariff to be offered by the Public Authorities to offshore renewable energy projects in the island.
