Intro • The Book of Hebrews is a plea for Christians to remain • faithful to Christ • Heb. 2:1-3:We are told to not drift away, so it is possible to drift away • Heb. 10:26-31:A Christian who turns away is guilty of trampling under foot the Son of God, disregards His blood that cleanses us, and insults the Spirit of Grace. • Heb. 10:38-39:Christians are not to be those that turn back! • Heb. 12:1-3:Jesus suffered the cross so that we may have victory thru Him, and that from His example; we might not grow weary and lose heart. • There is the danger that one may “fall short of God’s • grace,” or fall away • The Corinthians were admonished to take heed lest they fall (I Cor. 10:12). • Some of the Galatians had fallen from grace (Gal. 5:4).   3. Intro • Esau is used as a warning to Christians: • Esau is used as a warning to Christians to not “Sell out” their inheritance! Heb. 12:14-17 14. Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. 15. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; 16. that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17. For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears. • Esau asked for a bowl of lentil stew – Jacob set the price • for lentil stew: $Birthright! (Gen. 25:29-34) • Esau accepted saying, “I’m dying so what use is my birthright?” Esau sold his Birthright (Inheritance) for a bowl of stew – Many Christians accept that price! Heirs of Isaac • Esau and Jacob were Abraham’s grandsons: • Heirs of their father Isaac. • Esau was the older of twins (Gen. 25:20-26). • The birthright meant: • One would become head of the family at the father’s death. • One would receive a double portion of his father’s possessions. • One would take the lead in worship at the father’s death. • This birthright could be: • Traded, or sold, as Esau did (Gen. 25:29-34). Gen. 25:29-34 29. When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; 30. and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. 31. But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." 32. Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" 33. And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Heirs of Isaac • Esau is called “godless” • He lived only for the present! • Gen. 25:34:Esau “despised his birthright.” • Heb. 12:16: • Saints are warned to not let there arise among them, immoral and godless men like Esau. Esau sold his birthright for a single meal and serves as warning to us today! What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

  6. Heirs of God • Christians have the honor of being called sons of God • I Jn. 3:1-2 Christians are the heirs of God Rom. 8:14-17 14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" 16. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17. and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. “Abba” (G5): a personal name for father, “Papa,” or “Daddy” What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

Heirs of God • Christians have an Inheritance • I Pet. 1:3-5 • Christians have the promise that all things will work • together for their good (for those who love Him!) • Rom. 8:28 Jn. 14:15: To love Him is to obey Him • Christians have the promise of eternal life • I Jn. 2:25 • Tit. 1:1-2 Christians are in same position as Esau was, to inherit all the blessings of their Father! The Price For Stew With so much to inherit in the physical, Esau asked, “What is the price for stew?” (Gen. 25:32; Heb. 12:16) • With so much to inherit eternally, why do Christians ask, • “What is the price • for stew?” • II Tim. 4:10 II Tim. 4:10 10. for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. • Some may sell their spiritual birthright for: • “Riches and pleasures of this life” – Lk. 8:14 • “The love of money” – I Tim. 6:10-11 • “Friendship with the world” – Js. 4:4 • “Lusts of the flesh” – I Jn. 2:15-17 Christians who give up their eternal rewards for the temporal, passing pleasures of life, have sold their inheritance for “stew!” What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

Conclusion Esau sold his inheritance for a single meal, something that would only last the moment He later regretted it – But it was too late Once Isaac had spoken there was no change! • Heb. 12:17: He regretted it so much he desired and sought after it with much tears. • But it was too late for repentance! The judgment was set! What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

Conclusion • Christians who sell their inheritance and regret it, • through repentance can get it back! • Js. 5:19-20: One who has turned away can turn back! • I Jn. 1:9: One who confesses sin and asks for forgiveness will be forgiven! However, IFa Christian is found on Judgment Day having sold his eternal inheritance – there will be no second chance! Once God has spoken there will be no change! II Cor. 5:10 (Rev. 20:15) “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

  11. Conclusion The price for stew man might be willing to pay is the inheritance of heaven… The Price For Stew (worldly pleasures) is: Hell! (Mt. 25:41, 46) Jesus asked, “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mt. 16:26) Esau sold his inheritance for a bowl of lentil stew! (Gen. 25:34) What is your “stew?” It’s not worth the price! What Is Your Inheritance Worth?

  12. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
