  4. Matching Programs • Why do corporations have matching gift programs? • Provides employee benefits and increases morale • Improves external public relations – social responsibility • Promotes broad-based philanthropic programs • ExxonMobil Foundation: • Encourage employees & retirees in their personal giving and volunteering in the community where they live and work • Allows ExxonMobil and our employees to be seen in the community • Maintain positive relations with colleges and universities where employees attended • Primary support for the arts in local communities

  5. Trends in Matching Programs • Recent economic downturn has had some negative impacts • Mergers and corporate takeovers continue to change landscape of Programs • Program Administration • Most companies now outsource administration to reduce costs • ExxonMobil Foundation uses J. K. Group • Some companies administer Programs in-house • How can you help company’s minimize Program costs?

  6. Administration of Programs • Who do I contact with questions and problems? • Look at the company’s web site or application for the preferred contact • exxonmobil@easymatch.com • (877) 807-0204 • Don’t try to circumvent the process • If you don’t get the answer you think is correct (not just the answer that you want), ask to talk with someone else • If you get conflicting information or the run-around, ask for contact or e-mail of person at the company to contact • Where can I find policies and guidelines? • Included with paper application • Company web site – www.easymatch.com/exxonmobil

  7. ExxonMobil Web Site

  8. Administration of Programs • Paper or Electronic? • Trend is electronic applications, but most companies accept both • Benefits with electronic applications: • Eliminates programs costs and lost applications • Reduces time required for processing applications • Allows organizations to better track processing • How can you help companies encourage electronic applications? • What if I held a paper application and it’s now past the deadline? Will it still be honored? • Depends on the circumstances and the company’s policy • ExxonMobil tries to accommodate within reason • Less of a problem with electronic applications

  9. What Do I Need to Know To… • Complete an application? • What is the process? • Is a certification of gift receipt required? • Original signature required? Electronic? • Is there a deadline? • Are some gifts ineligible for matching? • Purpose  athletics, scholarships, alumni associations, religious • Donor benefits  subscriptions, tickets, scholarships • Track receipt of matching gift payments? • When are payments issued? • monthly, quarterly, annually • Is there a timeframe for requesting missing payment?

  10. Other Issues • Will companies help me with fundraising? • Most companies will not provide employee data or send out solicitations on company letterhead • Some companies will post notices on company web sites • Best suggestion is to utilize a company ‘agent’ or executive to help • Do matching gifts need to be acknowledged? • Depends - some companies require receipt, others do not • ExxonMobil Foundation does not require receipt
