WARM-UP • The Incarnation is the core mystery of the Christian faith. Why is it considered by Christians to be the central event of human history?
THEINCARNATION “Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.”Luke 1:30-31
Chap. 18 Vocabulary • Anna: prophetess who recognized Jesus as the Messiah when he was presented in the Temple • Augustus: first Roman emperor; established PaxRomana after many years of civil war • Caesar: title used by all the Roman emperors; when a NT writer mentions “Caesar,” he means the emperor who was reigning at the time. • Epiphany: manifestation of Jesus as the Christ; feast commemorating the adoration of the Magi
Chap. 18 Vocabulary • Hail Mary: words with which the angel Gabriel greeted Mary at the Annunciation: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.” • Immaculate Conception: Mary was conceived w/o the stain of original sin. • Incarnation: the condescension (advent or arrival) of God in human form • Simeon: aged man who recognized the Jesus as the Christ • Son of DAVID: title that belongs not only to Solomon but also to Jesus as the promised heir of the Davidic Kingdom.
THEINCARNATION • Luke 1:26 – 2:52 • Matthew 2:1-23 • John 1:1-18
THEINCARNATION In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (Jn 1:1, 14)
NT is hidden in the Old Testament. The Old Testament is revealed in the NT.
John’s Gospel Recalls Genesis Genesis 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.
THE HEART OF THE MYSTERY OF THE INCARNATION: • Two Inseparable Natures • DIVINE • HUMAN
The Son of David • New Testament begins by showing how Jesus descended from David and Abraham. • Matthew uses literary art to show that Jesus is the perfect Son of David. • For Matthew, the Exile ends with the coming of Jesus.
History for Matthew • 1. The Covenant with Abraham • 2. The Covenant with David • 3. The Deportation to Babylon
The Birth of JESUS • It was in the reign of Caesar Augustus, • when Quirinius was governor of Syria, • Augustus decreed that “all the world should be enrolled.”
JESUS AS MESSIAH By the titles the angels used, the shepherds knew right away that the Messiah had been born. • A Savior, who would rescue his people from bondage • The Christ, the Anointed One, the promised successor to David • The Lord, the one who sits at God’s right hand.
NuncDimittis Jesus is presented in Jerusalem’s Temple • Simeon’s testimony
Incarnation -God becoming man -not part God, part man-100% both!!! -hypostatic union -heresies against: -Docetism-Christ not really human -Arianism-Christ not really God -Council of Nicea 325 AD -Christ declared homoousious -same substance as the Father -Why?????? -for us to know the love of God -to be an example for us -to give us inherent dignity -to save us from sin*
Annunciation -Mary was betrothed to Joseph -first part of the marriage agreement -did not live together, but “cheating” still seen as adultery -Angel Gabriel appears to her - “Hail favored one” -God had her in mind since Adam and Eve!!! -Immaculate Conception -conception of Mary, NOT Jesus!!! -would not “pass on” Original Sin to her Child -remains free of sin for her whole life -Mary gives her unconditional “yes” -Fiat*
-Ever-virgin -Mary never had any other kids, no sex with Joseph -”brothers and sisters” refers to close relations of Jesus -she was supposed to serve the Lord in the Temple (consecrated) -Jesus wouldn’t give his mother to John on the cross if there were others to take care of her!!! -Why is Mary so important to Catholics??? -Theotokos= God-bearer -model disciple*
Birth of Jesus -Born in stable in Bethlehem -angels announce His arrival to shepherd -outcasts -Messiah announced first to those who were looked down on….foreshadowing of things to come!!! -Joseph names Jesus -sonship -Jesus=Joshua “God saves”*
Epiphany -Magi visit Herod -3 wise men, probably astrologers from Persia -pagan practice -ask him where they can find Jesus -Herod is smart enough to sense trouble for himself, sent them to Bethlehem with orders to come back with info -they give Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh -represent kingship -myrrh also anoints priests and dead bodies -dream warns wise guys to avoid Herod -Herod (a Jew) rejects Jesus, but pagans accept!!! -dream also tells Joseph to run -head to Egypt -Herod kills all boys under the age of 2 -Matthew trying to point out that He is a prophet like Moses!!!*
Jesus -Massacre of infants by Herod -Joseph -dreamer -son of Jacob -flees to Egypt -Jesus leads in Promised Land (Heaven) -Bethlehem -Christ born here -kingship* Old Testament Figures -Massacre of infants by Pharaoh -Joseph -dreamer -son of Jacob -sold into Egypt -Joshua leads into Promised Land (Canaan) -Bethlehem -Micah -David born here*
Murder of the Holy Innocents -safe from Herod, but still live in large Jewish population under Roman rule -killed because Herod didn’t want a threat to his lifestyle
