EXCERPTS for the Safety Audit Committee Preliminary Summary Report Campus Safety Awareness: Engaging Students to Create the Safest Campus Community Possible Lucia Yiu, BSc, BA, MScN Faculty of Nursing University of Windsor Windsor, Ontario November 2011
Project Overview: Purpose, participants , methods, & responses - 7 in CAW, 6 in Vanier, 2 Health fairs
Table 10.1 No. of Female Students Feeling Unsafe on Weekdays by Age (N=467) (Adjusted) Table 10.3 No. of female students reported they felt their safety has been compromised while you were on or around campus in the past 12 months, by age (N=467)
Table 10. 4 No. of female students who reported to the appropriate authority when their safety was compromised? (N=53) Reasons for not reporting: - Did not want to bother police officers - felt voiced complaints were minimized
Table 10.5 Phase I - Perceived Safety on campus during the past 12 months: Comparison of Younger (17-21) to Older (22+) students (N=467) Table 10.6 Phase I - Perceived Safety on campus during the past 12 months: Comparison of on campus and off campus students (N=467)
Table 17.2 Two Things the University Should Do To Improve Safety on Campus (N=93) Multiple responses from 93 of 95 (97.9%) students who completed the questionnaire
How to improve safety needs? What students said… • More visible emergency lights (e.g., flashing lights, visible location). • Place emergency number on campus phone at CAW • Road safety - Improve safety at intersection for visually impaired students, and control speed on California • Walksafe program – extend p.m. hours, phone number on key chain, revise pick up locations • Training for RAs to deal with emergencies and counselling distressed students during off hours • Campus safety promotion is important – use multiple means – both traditional and digital
Summary • Most unsafe time – 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. • Priority groups for campus promotion – young and on campus students • More on campus students than on campus students were aware of campus services and were feeling unsafe • More off campus than on campus students perceived safety is a concern. • Only 26% (n=53) reported safety incidents to campus police. • Brief interventions (safety displays & slogan contest) did not yield significance in safety knowledge gained. Need ongoing and multiple way to instill safety culture on campus • Collaboration among campus partners to promote safety for all students • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation needed
