Objectives of the day • Discuss the FDPC mission and its role in Faculty Promotion • Outline promotion process highlighting dates of interest • Summarize the partial flex model and its required and optional areas • Highlight the standards for promotion based on specific rank (assistant associate etc) • Basic structure for the application portfolio • Do’s and Don’ts in the promotion process

  3. FDPC’s Role in the Promotion Process Reviews Program, Adjunct, and Affiliate faculty promotion applications and makes recommendations on promotion to the DAA. Chair(s) serve as ad hoc committee members to review Administrative faculty requests for promotion. 3

  5. Promotion Process Divided into Subcommittees Rubric to determine meets or does not meet standard Individual scoring and subcommittee meets to discuss Questions Regarding Application? Email is sent to applicant for further clarification May or may not be asked to discuss portfolio with subcommittee

  6. Flex Model Goals Aims to recognize differences across programs as well as the similarities across all faculty members’ jobs and responsibilities to The Chicago School. Strives to recognize acceptable, as well as exceptional, performance. Intended to be used in harmony with annual reviews

  7. Flex Model Components Required Areas Teaching Advising Standing Committee Work Optional Areas Scholarship Service to the Profession Service to the Public Further Service to TCSPP Administrative Appointment

Eligibility by Rank: Assistant to Associate 5 professional years Half-time and full-time employment at TCSPP are treated equally, i.e., each year of half-time employment counts as a full “professional year”. Exceptional cases may wave professional year requirement 2 years as a program faculty member at The Chicago School Activity in All Required Areas Activity in 2 optional areas

Eligibility by Rank: Associate to Full 10 professional years Half-time and full-time employment at The School are treated equally, i.e., each year of half-time employment counts as a full “professional year”. Exceptional cases may wave professional year requirement 3 years as a program faculty member at The Chicago School Activity in All Required Areas Activity in 3 optional areas

Notes About What to Include Calculate means for first 16 items from teaching evaluations Copies of Syllabi are not required, but may be included CV publications and presentations must be listed in APA style and clearly indicate publication status. Please blot out salary information that may have appeared on your faculty review. Student work samples (e.g., conference posters) may be noted or cited, but need not be included in the application. Include copies of publications if possible List courses taught. List dissertation and/or thesis activity (chair and reader) Candidates’ own dissertations and/or theses should not be included in the application.

  11. Some Advice from FDPC Provide evidence! Unsolicited emails, cards, letters Highlight innovative teaching Consult Appendix to Flex Model for suggestions Only provide evidence for optional areas you intend on highlighting for consideration Don’t thinly spread evidence across all optional areas.
