TREE Project: In-depth Pollution Prevention September 12th, 2003 By: James DeMay
What is TREE? • Technical Resources Engineering Efficiency (TREE) team • Team of Ecology Engineers & Scientists • Multi-media team (water resources, water quality, solid waste, hazardous waste)
In-depth P2 • Spend 3-4 months with a facility (~450 staff hours) • Analyze companies operations and find ways to improve their process efficiency • Engineering and economic analysis of opportunities • Final report of opportunities presented to facility management
Project Goals • Improve the environment (i.e. reduce pollution) • Provide WA businesses with in-depth technical assistance • Cost effective opportunities • Increase process efficiency • Measurable results
2002 Projects • Del Monte (vegetable processor) • Encompass (reclaims silicon wafers) • Independent Foods (fruit processor) • Saint Gobain (crystal manufacturer)
Capital Investment………… Cost Savings…………………… Water Reduction …………… Chemical Reduction………… Haz Waste Reduction……… Solid Waste Reduction …… $72,000 (one time) $214,000/yr 22,600,000 gal/yr 79,600 lbs/yr 38,700 lbs/yr 116 tons/year 2002 Projected Savings
Highlight: Encompass • Work occurred on 7/02 – 11/02 • Reclaims silicon wafers • Focused on their strip and etch line and their lapping line • Itemized 4 opportunities for reducing water and hazardous waste
Encompass’ Opportunities • Strip and Etch Line • Convert HF stripping baths to HF/H2O2 mixture • Reuse 3rd rinses from each quick dump rinse (QDR) tanks • Recycle all QDR rinses • Lapping Line • Reduce the number of QDR rinse cycles
Savings – Encompass • Potential savings • 7 million gallons of water per year • 38,700 lbs of haz waste per year • $83,000 dollars per year • Actual saving as of 7/03 • Encompass has implemented 2 of 4 opportunities • Haz waste reduced by 30,000 lbs/yr • Water reduced by 220,000 gallons/yr
Savings – cont. “By targeting a specific area, the TREE team was able to apply more focused energy on finding ways to accomplish tasks. Specifically we thought we had run out of options regarding water reduction and chemical usage in the Stripping area. With the TREE team’s fresh approach and resource pool they were able to find solutions and tackle problems we had no answers or resources for." - Scott Landrigan, Operations Manager
Highlight: A Food Processor • Work occurred on 12/00 – 3/01 • Potato processor (french fries, frozen hashbrowns) • Itemized 7 opportunities • Focused on water usage
Opportunities • Eliminate fluming system overflow • Reuse defrost water • Reduce water flows in finish washer • Install low flow nozzles • Repair peel removal pump • Repair french fry cutter tubes • Train employees
Savings • Potential savings • 192,000 gallons per day (or 46 million gallons per year) • $93,000 dollars per year • Actual saving 6 months later • 170,000 gallons per day (or 41 million gallons per year) !!
Savings – cont. “I give the TREE team as high a recommendation as I can. I’m glad they came down and gave us a hand." - Rich Tolman, Plant Manager
Potential Candidates • Small to medium size companies • Willing to work with Ecology • Potential to improve process efficiency • Potential to reduce waste streams
