Christian view of John the Baptist • Mark’s Gospel focuses on John the Baptist as the forerunner • Matthew’s Gospel focuses on John the Baptist as the preacher of repentance • Luke’s Gospel focuses on John the Baptist as a prophet • John’s Gospel focuses on John the Baptist as the witness and herald of Jesus Christ

  3. Mark’s Gospel starts with John’s preaching. It does not include information on his infancy. • In Matthew’s Gospel his is preacher of repentance. True repentance is turning toward the goodness of God, the nearness of God’s grace. • In Luke’s Gospel it is possible to find information about John’s infancy. It also expands on John’s teaching. • The Gospel of John is particularly focused on John as witness. John 1:15 “ John testified to him (Jesus) and cried out, saying , ‘ This was he of whom I said, “ The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me”.

  4. Islamic view of John the Baptist • John the Baptist is honored prophet in Islam. • Amongst the twenty five prophets mentioned in the Quran . • In Islam he is known as YahyaibnZakariya. • He is believed to be the prophet who would herald the coming of prophet Isa (Jesus)

John the Baptist is one of the miraculously born prophets. • Quran 19:7 “ Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be John, one whose namesake We never created before.” • Depiction of his personality: serious, merciful, dutiful, chaste, righteous, pure and devout. • Quran 19:12 “ O Yahya! Hold fast to the Scripture (The Torah). And we gave him wisdom while yet a child.”

  6. Death of John the Baptist He was beheaded by the order of the Herod, king of Galilee Herod: “ It must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do so much miracles.”
