  4. The Area • 2.6 m population • Distinct sub-regions: • - Birmingham/Solihull, • - The Black Country, • - Coventry • Industrial legacy “The workshop of the world” • Cross-roads of the UK

  5. Challenges • Skills • £15bn Regional GVA productivity gap against the UK average • Jobs • Global economy jobs, fit for the future • Region’s unemployment rate currently 9% • Carbon • 80% reduction in UK greenhouse gas by 2050; 34% reduction by 2020

  6. Transport in the West Midlands • Car ownership rising – 47 cars per 100 residents • However 60% of households in Aston do not have access to a car • 7 million trips everyday
