What is Algebra? • Algebra is solving for unknown values when the result is known, using: • Scenarios • Equations • Graphs • Tables • Algebra is commonly used in every day life: • I have $50, can I buy these 3 DVDs? • Balloons are $1.50 each. How many can I get for $10? • Algebra is a way of thinking. • I’m more concerned about your thinking process than your use of one particular procedure or variable.
Algebra is the gateway course for upper level mathematics! • If you never took Algebra, you’re in the right place. • Because you think algebraically in your every day life, you have all of the necessary prerequisites. • If you took Algebra and hated it, you’re in the right place. • We’re going to look at things differently. • Leave your bad memories at the door. • If you took Algebra and loved it, fabulous! • You’ll still learn something new or look at something differently.
As Usual… • The calendar for this course can be found on the STEM Wiki: http://stem.iu1.wikispaces.net/CTE+Project. • I tried to avoid Mondays… • I tried to avoid 3-day weeks… • Please be prepared with your binder each day. The content will build upon itself, and your binder will be a great resource for you. • We will be working in groups for this class. Please sit with 2-3 peers for each class. • There will be 4 take-home tests, including the final. • Homework is very important in this course. There will not be a lot, but I highly recommend that you work through it.
U.S. Shirts Using Tables, Graphs, and Equations This past summer you were hired to work at a custom T-shirt shop, U.S. Shirts. One of your responsibilities is to find the total cost of customers’ orders. The shop charges $8 per shirt with a one-time set-up fee of $15. • What is the total cost of an order for 3 shirts? • What is the total cost of an order for 10 shirts? • What is the total cost of an order for 100 shirts? • Explain how you found the total costs. Write your answers in complete sentences.
• How many T-shirts can a customer buy for $50? • How many T-shirts can a customer buy for $60? • How many T-shirts can a customer buy for $250? • Explain how you found the number of shirts that can be purchased. Write your answers in complete sentences.
U.S. Shirts Using Tables, Graphs, and Equations Make a table of values for the problem situation.
U.S. Shirts Using Tables, Graphs, and Equations • What are the variable quantities in this problem situation? Assign letters to represent these quantities and include each quantity’s units. • What are the constant quantities in this problem situation? Include the units that are used to measure these quantities. • Which variable quantity depends on the other variable quantity? • Which of the variables is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable?
U.S. Shirts Using Tables, Graphs, and Equations • Create a line graph of the data from your table. • First, choose your bounds and intervals. • Remember to label your graph clearly and add a title to the graph. • Use your graph to determine the price of: • 40 shirts • 27 shirts • Use your graph to determine how many shirts can be purchased for: • $300 • $540.
U.S. Shirts Using Tables, Graphs, and Equations • Write an algebraic equation for the problem situation. • In this lesson, you have represented the problem situation in four different ways: as a sentence, as a table, as a graph, and as an equation. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each representation.
Homework • Complete the half-sheet for U.S. Shirts. • Next Class: Tomorrow, September 10th
