Utilities of Concern • Water • Sewer • Electrical • Heating systems • Natural gas • Petroleum • Electrical
Savings • Makeup feed water is heated from 50 degrees to 331 degrees to make 90# steam. Each gallon of water saved equals 2343 BTU’s that are not required. • From 02-03, makeup feed use has decreased by 571 KGAL (= 1,337,232 BTU = 9,035 GALS per year = $13,372/year. • Overall 40.5% reduction in makeup feed= water that is not “heated, treated and pumped” into the ground.
Electrical Consumption • All campus buildings are metered • Campus has its own substation • We pay higher rates during peak load periods • Normally 10 AM – 2 PM • Major electrical conservation measures have been enacted: • Retrofitting with fluorescent bulbs • HVAC retrofits • Energy management system • Conversion to gas cooking • Auto shutdowns of computer lab screens
“Good News/Bad News” • Every year, SUNY adds the equivalent of a SUNY Geneseo in electrical load to the grid. • Despite the significant measures taken, campus electrical loading has not dramatically decreased • Field House, Higgins Hall • Track lights
“Good News, Bad News”(in the “it all adds up” category) • Computers • Site lighting • Parking (lighting, storm water runoff) • In 1991, there were 1983 parking stalls. Today there are 2695. • “Bubble” lot, Higgins lot, Tennis Court lot • Microwaves in each student room • Refrigerators in each student room • Vending (soda/water/milk) • New ADA elevators (Mills/Wilsbach/Bugbee) • Convenience store (Mills uses 23% more elex than Wilsbach) • AC • Human Ecology, window shakers, Schumacher, computer labs, Morris • Fitzelle/Health Center/Cooperstown/part of Science II
NYPA Initiative • Retrofitting classrooms, labs, laundries with occupancy sensors • Conversion of commissary oven to natural gas • Possible expansion of this program to include some HVAC, site lighting and Milne Library stack areas.
Heating Systems • Most buildings heated from the central plant (~Higgins, Hunt, MOC, Fitzelle, Bugbee) • Campus has a “dual fuel” system • We “play the market” • “Interruptible rate” on natural gas • 430,000 + GAL on site storage of #6 • These tanks are re-filled in JUN/JUL
SUNY Wide Measures • SUNY Oneonta ranks 9th out of 32 campuses in EBTU/OSF fuel usage (includes Ag and Tech Colleges with barns, etc.) • SUNY Oneonta has reduced EBTU/SF consumption by - 5.4 % since FY 89/90.
Fuel Usage by “Degree Day” and Gallon Equivalent/Degree Day Down 3% Since 02/03
Overall Efficiencies • Roof replacements and maintenance program (these types of projects are capital intensive and have long “paybacks” (Sometimes 50-250 years) • Window replacements (Doubles, Bugbee) • The aggressive MTW line replacement increases plant efficiency • Don’t have to “heat, treat and pump” new cold water
“Collision of Worlds” • Personal safety vs Elex Consumption • Site lighting, corridor lighting • Demand for AC vs vs Elex Consumption • Demand for Parking vs Elex Consumption Storm Water runoff • Computers vs Elex Consumption • Personal comfort vs Energy Codes • Amenities vs Elex Consumption • Microwaves, refrigerators, vending machines • Convenience store, coffee shop
Autos • The campus has purchased 5 “hybrid” autos for the fleet. • Preliminary data suggests 45 MPG for some of these units. • Ethanol distribution points are seriously limited in Oneonta.
Summary Metrics • Water Usage:Down 34% in the last five years. • Makeup Feed Water Usage: Down 40.6% in the last 5 years. • Electrical Usage:Down 1% last year. University-wide elex use goes up 2%/year. • Heating Fuel Usage: Our “gallon equivalent per degree day” has gone down 3% over the past five years.
Coming Attractions • Boiler replacements • More elex retrofits (air handlers, motor controllers, site lighting, Milne stack areas?) • Replacement of MTW/Steam Condensate lines • Steam trap replacement program • New roofs and window projects (long paybacks) • NYPA Project • “Microfridges” in Tobey, Littell, Golding & Wilber? • Energy efficient • Would be regularly maintained • Would reduce “refrigerator” load more to 1/room • More engagement in student recycling
