Language Classifications • Every student in the state of California fall under one of four language classifications: • EO (English Only) • IFEP (Initially Fluent English Proficient) • RFEP (Reclassified Fluent English Proficient) 4. LEP (Limited English Proficient)
How Are Language Classifications Determined? • Home Language Survey (Completed by Parents When Student is Enrolled) • LAS (Language Assessment Scales) * Espanol / Spanish • CELDT (California English Language Development Test)
Language Classifications atGage Middle School • RFEP----- 1579 Students = 45% • LEP ------ 1373 Students = 39.7% * ESL Students = 597 * PRP Students = 776 • EO ------- 262 Students = 7.5% • IFEP ----- 254 Students = 7.8%
Gage Middle School’s Reclassification Goals • In the 2005-2006 school year the LD6 Reclassification goal for the year was 10%. • In the 2006-2007 school year the LD6 Reclassification goal for the year is 20% • To meet this goal, we must Reclassify at least 275 students.
Requirements for Reclassification • Score at least a 4 or 5 on the CELDT (Annually) 2. Score Basic, Proficient or Advanced in the ELA section of the CST. (Annually) • Pass English/ESL class with a grade of ‘C’ or better. * As of September 2006, students no longer need to pass their Math class with a grade of ‘C’ or better to be eligible for reclassification.
What Are We Doing to Help LEPs Reach the Goal Of Reclassification? • Improving articulation between feeder schools and Gage • Educating parents and students about the ELD program and Reclassification requirements. • Intersession / Intervention (After School Tutoring) • Saturday School • Free Home Tutoring (LAUSD) • Alternative Academic Programs (EIEP) • Professional Development (SDAIE, Backwards Planning, etc.) • Counseling Students / Monitoring Student Progress • Keeping Teachers Informed (LEP Monitoring Form) • Language Appraisal Teams (LAT) • Homework Help Center (All Subject Areas) • Math in Spanish Intervention Pilot Program
Startling Reclassification Data for LAUSD • The drop out rate for LEP students in over 70%. • Out of the LEP students who complete four years of high school, only 20% meet the graduations requirements.
