Progress Report #1 Brad Poirier, Bryce Everist, Colin Gillis, Justin Clifton, Shoneth MacInnis
Overview • Bridge width decided • Gravel Types decided • Flooding areas located • New information from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Department of Environment and Labour
Objective • Help the Town of Antigonish meet their goals of diverting cyclists and pedestrians away from busy streets and promoting healthy lifestyles
Blaine Gillis • CEO RDA Strait Highlands Region • Gained information on Cape Breton and surrounding area trail systems and trail development in other towns
Nova Scotia Trails Association • Contacted through email • Directed to their website and published document about design process, implementation, and completion of trail
Charles MacInnis • Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) • Agreed with idea of bridge • A water course alteration permit is needed • Bridge would eliminate youth placing pallets across, restricting flow and preventing spawning
David Shea • Environment and Labour • Bridge abutments cannot be within three meters of rivers edge • Abutments cannot alter ice flow • Removal of trees may alter strength of banks • Vehicles entering bridge area are a concern to the water and sewage lines
David Shea • Location • Received a map that shows the high water contours of 1-in-20 and 1-in-100 year flooding • Advised to build the bridge to withstand the 1-in-20 year flooding
Marvin Hudson • Stora Enso Woodlands Unit • Grant Hayden (retired) • Directed to Forest Engineers Mike Kelly Paul McDonald
Measurements and Location • Footings must be three meters from bank • Therefore, bridge will be placed at highest point on the riverbank to comply with regulations • Distance is now 50 feet, approx. 15 meters
Measurements and Location • Ideal width is 6 feet, allowing any combination of walker, cyclist or wheelchair user to cross at the same time • Ice flows under the other bridges along the river, and therefore our bridge must be equally as high or slightly higher to accommodate for any extra ice picked up between bridges
Bernie Chisholm • St. Francis Xavier University Cross Country Running coach and former National Coach for both World Championships and World University Championships • Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame Inductee • Crusher Dust is best for top layer (A little more expensive) • Type II Gravel for base
Bernie Chisholm • First layer to be graded then rolled • Second layer to be rolled • Once it rains, the path will be almost permanent under normal conditions
Achieved Goals • Additional Accomplishments • Contacted Stora Enso and David Shea • Obtained Flood Plain Map
