John Penry executed 1593 • Penry was a Welsh Minister • Penry was concerned that there were not enough Welsh speaking Chruch Ministers in Wales and he also wanted a Welsh copy of the bible. • He started to print books about his concerns and was put in prison • Penry escaped and ran to Scotland. He remained there for three years but eventually decided to return to London to continue his protest that the word of God should be preached in Welsh in Wales • He was arrested • His chains were removed and he was dragged on a hurdle through the narrow streets to St Thomas. There he was hanged in the open air.

Describe the punishment of burning at the stake in the 17th Century It was punishment used in the 16th and 17th Century. The offender would be burnt alive. It was the severest Tudor punishment it was believed the criminals soul would go to Heaven. It was used by Mary Tudor to burn 300 Protestant Heretics between 1555-1560. It was a public punishment which was meant to deter others from committing similar crimes and humiliate the offender.
