Elements of a Good Paragraph The 4 Elements: *Topic *Facts *Unity *Coherence
Topic • Develop a Thesis statement • ex: quotes, direct statements, overviews • Thesis= idea or purpose of what you want to say • “Thesis is the key”
Facts • Must support the main idea • Minimal of two facts per paragraph • Must be in your own words • May be literal or inferential • *literal= who?, what?, where?, when? • *inferential= why?, how?
Unity • A single key idea unites related facts • Facts and thoughts must be relevant • Unity=“one-ness”
Coherence • Ideas must: • *Stick together • *Be Logically connected • *Relate to the paragraph topic
Mechanics of Writing Paragraphs should include: -Formal English -Correct use of Grammar -Proper Word Usage -Word Structure
Formal English • No slang • ex: “wassup?”, “ain’t”, etc… • No informal English • ex: can’t, don’t, sucks, etc… • No use of 1st or 2nd person pronouns • ex: I, you, your, etc…
Grammar • Parts of Speech • -noun, adjective, preposition, etc… • Parts of a Sentence • -subject, predicate, complement, etc… • The Phrase • -prepositional phrases, appositives, etc… • The Clause • -independent/subordinate clauses, etc….
Word Usage • Agreement • -subject, verb, pronoun, and antecedent • Correct use of Verbs • Correct use of Pronouns • Correct use of Modifiers • -comparison and placement
Word Structure • Capital letters • Punctuation • Italics vs. Quotations
