  2. Basic Terminology • Simplified form • A rational expression is in simplified form only if its numerator and denominator have no common factors.

  3. Properties Notice that c is in both the denominator and the numerator. To simplify, simply divide out the common factor of c. = Divide out common factor of 5 Divide out the common factor of x+3

  4. Example So remember… first factor the numerator and denominator. Divide out any factors that are common to both the numerator and denominator. = You can divide out common factors in the second expression… but you cannot divide out like terms in the third expression. =7

  5. Now You Try… Factor the numerator and denominator. Divide out common factor Answer!!!
