  1. Fraction Practice! Directions: Complete the following slides together as a partner activity. Record your answers on a sheet of paper with both of your names. Make sure you turn in your work before you leave!

  2. Let’s Review Decomposition! Decomposing just means to break a fraction down into small amounts If we decompose 4 1/4, we can do it 3 different ways! 1. 2. 4/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 1/4 = 4 1/4 Remember: whatever the denominator is in the fraction part of the mixed number, is what my whole numbers represents. 3. 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + ¼ or 2 + 2 + ¼ or 1 ¼ + 3 Or any other way

  3. Assignment 1. Decompose 3 ½ in all three ways! After you’ve decomposed the Mixed Number above, think back to decomposing a regular fraction. Remember: Just keep the denominator the same and add up the numerator. For example: 4/5 = 1/5 +1/5 + 2/5 Assignment 2. Decompose 5/9

  4. Assignment 3. 1/5 + 1/10 = 1/3 + 1/9 = Assignment 4. 1/4 - 1/8 = 1/6 – 1/12 =

  5. Assignment 5. Convert the following Mixed Number to Improper Fraction Remember: You may change these to proper fractions and add or do the multiplication shortcut. 4 1/5 3 1/6

  6. Let’s Preview a few new concepts! Making Equivalent Fractions Fraction Word Problems

  7. How to make equivalent fractions. Let’s look at an example……. 2/3 = ? / 6 Step 1: Look at the two denominators. Determine what you need to do to the smaller to get to the larger. Step 2: Multiply the complete fraction on both top and bottom. 6 is the largest denominator. I need to multiply 3 by 2 to get to 6 and I also need to multiply 2 by 2 now as well. Step 3. Multiply the numerator and fill in the missing part. 2 x 2 = ? = 4 x 2 = 6 6 Do a few on your own! 2/4 = ?/12 1/3=?/9 2/4=?/8

  8. Fraction word problems are easy! Taylor has 12 pieces of candy. Kaylyn eats 4. How many are left? Step 1. Decide what the total amount is that you started with…..12. That’s your denominator. Step 2. Subtract 12-4…….6, that’s your numerator. Step 3. Your answer is……. 6/12………..or…….1/2! Try this one! Tim has 9 cats. He gives 4 away. How many are left?

  9. Frank eats 2/7 of a cake and Harry eats 4/7. How much of the cake was eaten? Just add! 2/7 + 4/7 = 6/7 Now you try!! Tony drinka 3/8 of the gallon of milk. Lee drinks 2/8 of the gallon of milk. How much of the milk did they drink together? Challenge: How much of the gallon is left?
