Roosevelts New Deal gained support from congress but onlyfor a short initial time. • Therewas a false unity in America following the New Deal that hid the divided nation • When the immediate crisis was avoided the unity in America was gone and many were left to pick sides in the choosing of the new deal Roosevelt's New Deal

Once the economic benefits of the new deal came into effect many business owners supported the new deal and wanted to voice their opinions • Then they began to split wanting different things to be done for the economy • business leaders began to sidewith Al Smith and created the American Liberty league (ALL) Business Opposition

The American Liberty League’s main focus was to counter act New Deal Radicalism. • They planned to do this by convincing southern whites to hate the New Deal causing the democratic political party to split • This was done through funding southern racist groups American Liberty League

There were many who favored the New Deal and thought that the government favored big businesses too much • Poverty was growing rapidly even though the unemployment rate was decreasing • There were 9 million Americans with no source of income, this caused 1.5 mil. Workers to go on strike • Out of the 6.6 million elderly in america only 4000,000 were receiving benefits from welfare Poverty in America]

Many Americans would also try and turn the public view to anti New Deal, a priest with a radio show spread anti New Deal beliefs by blaming the Jewish which caused ant-Semitic beliefs as well • Francis Townsend created a plan to give all unemployed citizens 200 dollars a month. • This plan was economically impossible within government that they had, there simply wasn’t enough money. He invented the Share Our Wealth Society (SOWS), it was to seize any income over $1 mil. A year and any family with over $5 mil a year and distribute 200 dollars a month to the unemployed. • Mid 1935 the organization had 7 million members • Long was assassinated in September 1935 Huey Long

While Roosevelt was dealing with economic problems the left wing was gaining support and political ties. • Robert La. Follette was elected into senate a supporter of the left wing. • Follette appointed his brother to governorship, Left Wing Critics

Other parties at the time were gained support and ties through different members • The Democrats nominated Upton Sinclair • The U.S. Communist party began to gain support as well renouncing any attempts at trying to over throw the U.S. Government they attacked issues like racism within the country and fascism outside of the country Political Parties
