  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. 1. Basic Situation/Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

  5. 2. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  6. 3. Climax • This is the most suspenseful part of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict, Causing the main character to change in some way. The turning point.

  7. 4. Falling Action • Events that unwind the plot and lead to resolving the conflict.

  8. 5. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending. All loose ends are tied up.

  9. Setting • Is the time and place a story takes place

  10. Character • A person or animal in a story, play or other literary work.

  11. Point of View • Position from which the story is told • First person • Third person

  12. Conflict • A struggle between opposing characters or forces.

  13. Theme • The general insight or discovery about life that we take away from a story.
