Session 1Workshop Group 1 (FNN, SAEDA, KKM/AA-B, NLRF/CSRC, Ainokai , APNFS) Name of Presentor
The CASES • Brokering by Farmer-Private Company--pig marketing (CP Cambodia Co) --contract farming (PRAN Bangladesh thru GAFSP Private Sector Window) --- milled rice ((with rice millers with EU funds, SNV) • Brokering by Private Company with NGO and government ---milled Rice – EMRIP project (rice miller, funded by EU. Assisted by SNV) ---cross border trading of corn (Thai trader) – with provincial government support
The CASES • Brokering by NGO enterprise --organic rice marketing (CEDAC) --organic pig marketing (CEDAC)--vegetable marketing (CEDAC)
Reflections • The growing trend of where farmers buy seeds from companies, farmers do not grow/breed seeds by themselves. • No middlepersons in all the cases • In contract farming, there is not much farmer choice ( what crop, seed, technology, price ) ; ---not much room for innovation---farmer reduced to assembly line growers • --less innovation by farmers • --how will agriculture grow?
Reflections • PRAN agro hub model okay IF owner is FO-but need capacity building, management capacity of FO ----- FO can hire recruit professionals ----- sons/daughter trained in schools to work in agro enterprises • Need to build negotiating skills through collective groups/cooperatives
Reflections • In Cambodia : lands are bought or leased by rich people and small farmers become laborer or are displaced and become migrant laborers in cities and other countries • In Laos : govt gives incentives to FDIs, should have more incentives to farmers • Need for consumer education esp for organic products thru mass media and personal orientation • Build capacities to produce more efficiently (less cost, better quality, able to respond to demand)
