Civil Rights • What are civil rights?  • The protections and privileges given to all U.S. citizens by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights  • The positive actions of government that seek to make constitutional guarantees a reality for all citizens  • Fight for Civil Rights  • Bill of rights – White men are granted rights  • Civil War – black men and women are freed • Civil Rights Amendments  • Reconstruction (and end) • 19th Amendment – Women are given the right to vote  • Civil Rights Movement 60-70’s

  2. The Process • Native American Rights • ERA (1972): equal rights not abridge based on sex • Title IX of Education Acts of 1972  • Affirmative Action • programs intended to remove “artificial barriers” to employment and education • Americans with disabilities • What is next???? • Gay Rights

Why are Civil Rights movements necessary?  • We are all prejudice. • Thus we seek to achieve what should have been granted already  • “I have a Dream” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  “In a sense we have come to our nation’s capitol to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  • Should Civil Rights be doled out? Or should people just be left alone? • Does distribution of Civil rights lead to division? • What is the result?
