Regulatory Bodies Controlling what you see and hear
Why Have Them? • To protect the viewer • To protect people on film • To control content • To control opinion • To control commercial interests
Who Are They? There are many regulatory bodies that control the actions of the industry from television to film to computer games to newspapers to magazines. All parts of the industry are in some way regulated – often by many different bodies
What Do They Do? • They enforce various guidelines to ensure that what is broadcast or printed falls within certain limits and to certain standards • Often they are “self-regulating” – that is they are formed by the industry to police itself, hopefully preventing adverse outside scrutiny
Issues • access • consumer choice • freedom of information • censorship • ownership • taste and decency
Examples • British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) • British Video Association (BVA) • Film Distributors Association (FDA) • Video Standards Council (VSC) • Television, Radio and Telecommunications Office for Communication (Ofcom) • Press Complaints Commission (PCC)

Task - Background • Look at the regulatory body of your choice • Find out about why it is there • Find out when it was set up • Find out who set it up • Find out its history • Find out about the decisions it has made
Task • Present your findings in any way that you feel appropriate • You can use game or video clips, sound, Flash, create a presentation, write an essay, shoot a documentary – whatever you think best gets across your findings
Bonus Marks! • Extra marks will be given if: • You argue the pros and cons of your organisation well • You show how the body could affect your work in the industry • You present it in an interesting and thought provoking way
What To Choose? • Any of the bodies mentioned or any other (with prior agreement) • If you choose the BBFC focus on specific areas • If you are looking at censorship issues feel free to look at other censors from around the world
