Search and Rescue Challenges • Lack of Information • Notification: No Notification, No Response • Position: Inaccurate or No Position, Must Search • Passage of Time • Even if Incident Position Known, Drift Uncertainty Quickly Enlarges Search Area and Delays Rescue • Early Rescue Is Imperative if Injuries or Cold Environment Involved
VHF-FM Communications VHF Capabilities VHF Limitations Line of Sight (25 Mile Range Under Ideal Conditions) Communication Transmissions Can be “Stepped On” No Automatic Activation No Automatic Notification If Not Equipped w/DSC Many Recreational Boaters are Not Equipped Water + Radio = Inoperability Requires User Input Provides a Possible Line of Bearing for the Search Area Require External Power Source (Will Not Work if Boat Batteries are Dead) • Monitored 24/7 • Expanded Range (over cell-phones) • Can Tune-In Weather Information • Do Not Require a Special Permit
