Post-high school options • In Between or Growth (Gap) Year • Applied Technical Schools • Military • Community College or 2 year College • 4 year College/University
In-Between Year or Growth (GAP) Year • Allows student to grow and mature and recover from burn out. • Options include established programs for personal growth, travel, service (City Year), internships in National Parks and 13th year programs for students who want to improve their grades and study a bit before college. • East Coast Prep schools are a common option. • Check with individual colleges to learn about their GAP year protocol.
Applied Technical Schools • Often referred to as vocational schools. • They offer specific training, usually in shorter periods of time than traditional community colleges or Universities. • These schools usually cost more than Community Colleges and the credits earned at them may or may not be transferable to four-year schools. • Local Examples: DeVry Institute, Bryman College, Media Tech Institute, Culinary Institute, UEI, Paul Mitchell, The School.
Military • The military is an option for all high school graduates. • Eighteen year old boys are required to register with the selective service. They must register in order to be eligible for federal financial aid for college. • Information and applications for Military contact and ROTC scholarships are available in the College and Career Center.
Community College/ 2 Year College • At a 2 year college, students can receive an Associate degree, pursue an applied career path, or choose to transfer to a 4 year University. • Some California CC’s offer off campus housing; refer to NAVIANCE for a complete list. • 123 California Community Colleges. • Ambassadors from Mira Costa CC are on our campus each week to meet with students in the College & Career Center.
Reasons to Consider community college • You are short on college funds. • You are not sure about college. • You are not sure what kind of program you want to pursue. • Your GPA is not so great and you want to build your skills before transferring. • You’d like a career-oriented degree, such as a fashion-design or computer-certification program. • You work, or have commitments, and need a flexible schedule.
4 Year College/University • California State University (CSU) • University of California (UC) • Out of State Colleges/Universities • Private Colleges/Universities
California State university (CSU) • 23 campuses • Service Area: CSU San Marcos • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.csumentor.edu • Students are evaluated through eligibility index: SAT (V&M) + (800 x GPA*) = 2900 or above (10 x composite ACT score) + (200 x GPA*) = 694 or above * 10-12 GPA
University of California (UC) • 9 campuses • Visit: pathways.ucop.edu/doorways/list for a complete list of Torrey Pines High School UC approved courses • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply • Application determined by comprehensive review or holistic review process • CSIS ID # = State ID # (on student transcript)
Out of state & Private colleges • Admission requirements vary by institution • Often use “committee” type admission process • Students should check with individual campuses to determine admission requirements & deadlines • Many campuses use the Common Application (Visit www.commonapp.org) • Letters of Recommendation may be required
What to Consider when looking for the “right” College Match • 1. Start with who you are and why you are going. • 2. Size matters: Your college does not have to be bigger than your high school. • 3. A name-brand college will not guarantee your success. • 4. You don't need to pick a major to pick a college. • 5. You don't have to go to college right away, and it's never too late. • 6. There is a college for EVERYONE! • 7. Look for schools that match your strengths and learning style. • 8. Know yourself…Identify the priorities for you and your family. • Source: NPR, Martha O’Connell • *Remember, 84% of all colleges accept more than 50% of the students who apply to them. • Source: National Association for College Admission Counseling.
SAT/ACT Test Information • University of California: • Require SAT reasoning or ACT w/ writing • SAT subject exams optional (highly recommended for college of engineering applicants (Math Level 2 and Science) • CSU: • Require SAT or ACT w writing • Private Schools: • Refer to school websites, some allow ACT exam to replace subject test requirements. • * Check specific program testing requirements- as some majors require certain subject tests
UPCOMING SAT and ACT Tests Dates • SAT: • Spring: June 1st • Fall: October 5th, November 2nd, December 7th* • Register at: www.collegeboard.org • ACT: • Spring: June 8th • Fall: September 21st, October 26th, December 14th* • Register at: www.act.org • *Check with individual colleges to determine if they will accept December test date.
Letters of recommendation • Required by most colleges on Common Application (check www.commonapp.org for individual college requirements). • Recommend 10th or 11th grade teacher of an academic subject for letters of recommendation. • Students should ask teachers and counselors well in advance (at least 2 weeks) for a letter of recommendation, and thank them after. • Letters to common application colleges are generally submitted through NAVIANCE by teachers and counselors. • Student and parent must sign a FERPA waiver before a teacher or counselor writes and submits letter of recommendation. • Brag packets for teachers and counselors are available on NAVIANCE (student account only) in the “about me” section.
Counselor Letter OF recommendation Deadlines • For Early Admissions: • September 27th 2013 • The deadline to request a LOR and submit student’s brag packet for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 1st 2013 or before. • ForRegularAdmissions: • October 31st 2013 • The deadline to request a LOR and submit student’s brag packet for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 2nd 2013 or after.
Prospective College athletes • NCAA Eligibility Center • Students need to register online by end of Junior year at: www.eligibilitycenter.org • 2.
