Public-private partnership for data acquisition and sharing, a realistic option ?
Public-private partnership for data acquisition and sharing,a realistic option ? • Some observations: • Focus on usage areas • More than on thematic data layers • Beneficial to set clear definitions of data content and applications / use • define the usage and requirements both from industry and public • ex. Unlike its predecessor, SEAPOP has a defined use in industry ERA (data format and adaption) • More specialized databases instead of bigger, more generic ones • but with data input/output via standards • easier for industry to see benefit and to contribute • Work towards common industry associations – not single players • Avoid «competitive advantage» data content, Industry will not contribute • Data owners – publication rights • Limited in time • Focus on mutual benefit • Access to more data than your own • no hidden data – reduce uncertainty towards best available data • Make it available to public / research (available = downloadable) – Societal benefit
