Post-16 options The aim of this presentation is to explore the options after Year 11 in more detail and to look at how you can progress. This presentation will help you to: learn more about post-16 options and where you can do them look at how the options allow you to progress on to different levels of qualification, and find out what’s available to help you make your decision.
Post-16 options Your progress after Year 11 There are three main options: Stay in full-time education in a sixth form or college. Start an Apprenticeship. Go into employment – preferably with training.
Post-16 options Full-time education • You can stay on at your own sixth form. • You can go to a sixth form in a different school. • You can go to a further education college, that may offer a wide range of courses at different centres. • You can go to a specialist college, for example to study agriculture. The options available in full-time education are: • a Diploma • AS and A levels, and • vocational qualifications. @ 16 @ 16 @ 16
Post-16 options If you want to study full-time after Year 11, you will need to think about: the results previous students got the size of the place how you are going to get there the facilities they have to offer the courses they offer
Post-16 options Apprenticeships • An Apprenticeship is a combination of work and training. • Some learning may be at college or with a training provider. @ 16 @ 16 @ 16
Post-16 options Apprenticeships At 16 you can go into work and continue learning through an Apprenticeship. You will: study at a training provider, college or on-the-job. be taught how to do the job get paid while you’re learning work towards qualifications such as an NVQ and Functional Skills work with an employer
Post-16 options Study options Whether you choose full-time learning or Apprenticeships, there will be: • lots of opportunities to study different qualifications, and • different pathways you can take. @ 16 @ 16 @ 16
Post-16 options Employment Caution should be taken when choosing this option: • the job may be seasonal or temporary • without qualifications it’s more difficult to get a better job, and • you are more likely to earn less in the long run. Although… • having a job means you will learn valuable skills • you could choose to study part-time, or • you could ask your employer to support you through some training or qualifications.

Post-16 options Now that you’ve looked at the options in more detail, it’s time to consider where you are at the moment and how you can progress! Qualifications are offered at different levels. What level you do after school will depend on what you choose to do and what qualifications you already have…
Post-16 options Qualification levels and what they mean Level 1: Four to five GCSEs at grades D to G or equivalent. Level 2: Four to five GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent. Level 3: Two or more A levels, an Advanced Apprenticeship, or BTEC Level 3. Level 4 to 6: Degree or HND/HNC. Level 7 to 8: Postgraduate qualifications.
Post-16 options More examples… Level 1 Level 2 GCSEs at grades D to G Foundation Diploma BTEC Level 1 NVQ level 1, and level 1 award, certificate or diploma GCSEs at grades A* to C Higher Diploma BTEC Level 2 NVQ level 2, and level 2 award, certificate or diploma.

AS or A Levels Advanced Diploma Progression Diploma BTEC National NVQ level 3, and level 3 award, certificate or diploma. Level 7 and 8 Masters degrees postgraduate qualifications, and Doctorates.
Post-16 options Qualifications can make a difference! They can: Help you to earn more money! Lead to higher level courses such as degrees and HNDs. Help you get a job and progress in it. Mean that you have more skills to offer.
