About Miss Deck • My Background • Grew up in Westerville • Graduated from Kent State University • Currently live in New Albany with my precious kids, my fish Gunther and Nelly • My Experience • Second year teaching 5th grade • Taught for a year in Utica • Technically 3rd year working in 5th grade

  4. Our Schedule • Community is spent in homeroom class • Monday and Friday • Library lesson every other week, check-in/check-out every Monday • Monday check-in/out, Tuesday lessons • Reteach & Enrichment • MWF • Writing Workshop • TTH

  5. Our Schedule • Study hall offered daily during recess for students to work on homework or catch up on missing work • Band is once a week during recess

  6. Classroom Rules and Expectations • Take Care of Yourself • Take Care of Others • Take Care of the Environment • 1st Quarter Goal • Behavior Plan and Chart • Warning=yellow note home • Time Out=blue note home and missing recess • Principal=visit to Mr. Heuser’s office

  7. Springer Bucks • Started this quarter with 12- should always be kept in binder or cinch sack • Team Expectations • All materials to class • Homework completed and turned in • Overall 5th grade behavior • One Springer Buck left at end of quarter to participate in fun day

  8. Classroom Communication • Friday Folders • sent home every Friday with graded papers from the week and should be returned every Monday empty • 5th Grade Team Website • Monthly newsletter sent home and e-mailed at first of the month • Schoology • Grades • Missing Assignments • Checking regularly should prevent any surprises

Parent/Teacher Communication • Conferences Thursday, November 7th, Wednesday November 13th from 8:30-11:30 and in evening • Sign up on the ½ hour with me • Sign-up online • Will have 10 minutes with each content teacher and we will guide you through the rotation • Only core teachers will be present, please contact me to meet with support teachers as well

  10. How Can I Help Out? • Parent volunteers to copy • Volunteer at holiday party or field day • Items needed throughout the year: • TISSUES!!! (they were accidently left off the supply list) • Disinfectant Wipes • Hand Sanitizer • Ziploc baggies

What Can I Expect? • Small group guided reading instruction based on strengths and goals of each individual student • Reading assessments allow for more direct teaching points • Individual reading conferences between teacher and student • Reading response letters due on assigned day every week • Individualized word work packets every week due on Friday, based on spelling assessment given at beginning of year • Reading mini-lesson everyday and Writing mini-lesson on Mondays and Wednesdays

Typical Day in Language Arts • 15-20 minute mini-lesson on reading or comprehension strategy • 30 minutes of reading workshop in which students are working in guided reading groups, independently reading while applying strategies we learn in class , finding “just right” books, working on reading journals • 10-15 minute writing mini-lesson on Mondays and Wednesdays

  15. What is Reading Workshop? • Main focus is to foster a love for reading and to personalize instruction to accommodate all students

  16. What is Writing Workshop? • An individualized approach to writing in which students are taught through a mini-lesson which includes a writing strategy and then given time to apply it to their own writing • Mini-lessons taught on Monday and Wednesday, with students given 35 minutes of independent writing time on Tuesdays and Thursdays • Allows for individualized conferences to meet all student needs • Research-based Lucy Calkins program

  17. Required Novels for the Year • Chasing Vermeer and Bridge To Terabithia • Order online through the Scholastic website www.scholastic.com or take care of finding it on your own • Class scholastic activation code L7Z6H • Each book cost $4.00 • Please order by September 15th

  18. Relating To The Standards • Target Goals posted daily • I CAN statements posted daily- “kid-friendly” standards • Push to Common Core standards this year • OAA Testing will test the old Ohio standards until next year

  19. Testing Schedule • OAA Testing • Reading: Monday, April 28th • Math: Wednesday, April 30th • Science: Friday, May 2nd • Terranova- Social Studies ONLY March 10th

  20. How Can I Help My Child? • Set aside time every night for your child to read, at least 20 minutes a night • Actively talk with your child about what he or she is reading • What is it about? • How do you relate/connect with the story? • What do you think will happen next?

  21. How Can I Help In General? • Volunteer to copy for the 5th grade teachers  • Items needed throughout the year: • Tissues (they were accidently left off the supply list) • Disinfectant Wipes • Hand Sanitizer • Ziploc baggies
